There is an immense variety of stream insects and other invertebrates living in Sierra Nevada streams but how can we catalog this diversity?  SSI and UC Santa Cruz have embarked on a quest to build a data set that links species collected from streams of our region to their unique sequences of DNA.

This will form a library of information showing genetic diversity among and within species and provide new tools for surveys of stream life.  Joni Mitchell sang “You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone”, but you don’t know what’s gone unless you know what’s there.

So we’re discovering what’s out there in order to know what we have to lose, and how we might prevent that. With presenters David B. Herbst, Ph.D., and  Ajith Seresinghe.
