California Biodiversity Day 2023

September 2, 2023 - September 10, 2023

Register Now

California Biodiversity Day takes place on September 7th of each year, marking the anniversary of the launch of the California Biodiversity Initiative in 2018. This annual event celebrates our state’s exceptional biodiversity, while also encouraging actions to protect it.

Come celebrate California’s biodiversity this year during the week of September 2nd – 10th! Explore biodiversity in your local neighborhoods and parks or join one of the many CA Biodiversity Week events, which includes guided hikes, volunteering, and becoming a community nature scientist! See below for more information and use the hashtag #CABiodiversity to share your biodiversity day adventures.

This year we continue to celebrate Governor Newsom’s Nature Based Solutions Executive Order committing the state to conserving 30% of lands and coastal waters by 2030, an initiative known as 30×30. The 30×30 goal is intended to help accelerate conservation of our lands and coastal waters through voluntary, collaborative action to meet three objectives: conserve and restore biodiversity, expand access to nature, and mitigate and build resilience to climate change.

Join the 30×30 movement and contribute to our collective knowledge about California’s Biodiversity! Find and photograph at least 30 wild species in California as part of the “Find 30 Species for CA 30×30” challenge. Participating is easy! 1. Join this project. 2. Download the iNaturalist app on your phone. 3. Make your observations during CA Biodiversity Week!
