Do you ever have 🔥burning🔥 questions about forest management and wildfire? 🌲

Check out this Storymap by Sustainable Northwest, where a team of leading fire and forest scientists summarized the consensus in the field on 10 common questions about fuel reduction in seasonally dry, fire-prone forests.

Is thinning enough? Is suppression the goal? Will planting more trees mitigate climate change in Western forests?

These questions and many more are answered in the Storymap, giving readers a better understanding of what our forests need.

It’s time to stand up for nature and climate in California. 🏞️

To address California’s projected budget shortfall of $31.8 billion, Governor Newsom’s newly revised budget leaves a lack of funds for climate and natural resources projects. The Governor proposes a “climate resiliency bond” to fill the gap.

While we support a bond, several programs with proposed reduced funding cannot be backfilled with bond funding.

We invite organizations to join us and sign the Power in Nature Coalition’s letter urging the Legislature to restore $45 million in essential funding for science, monitoring, planning, and capacity-building programs that cannot be backfilled with bond funding.

The deadline to sign the letter is close of business today, June 2.

We’re looking for volunteers for our next Tahoe Blue Crew Cleanup. 💙

Come join our Tahoe SNAP members for our Lake Tahoe Clean in a SNAP beach cleanup. We’ll be enjoying the sunset while picking up trash after what we expect to be a busy weekend.

Sunday, June 11, from 6 – 8 pm

Every volunteer must sign a waiver, which can be completed online in advance.

The cleanup will take place at Chimney Beach on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. This is a popular beach on the weekends, so we expect to find a lot of trash on Sunday evening.

What to bring: Gloves, water bottle, litter picker, sturdy shoes, and layers. Cleanup supplies will be available to use for those who need them.

SNAP Spotlight💫

Noé Romo Loera is a Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP) member working with American Forests as a Southern Sierra Reforestation Technician.

American Forests projects in the Southern Sierra aim to reforest and recover over 2,600 acres of land affected by high-intensity fires. On-the-ground work such as climate-smart reforestation, natural regeneration surveying, and cone collection aid in increasing forest resilience and carbon sequestration. Partners in this project include Sequoia National Forest, Tule River Indian Tribe, and Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest.

Noé’s role includes supporting on-the-ground implementation of a variety of forest resilience projects, including site preparation and tree planting, and cone collection. Additionally, Noé has been developing and practicing scientifically robust surveying methods to collect data to support decision-making around future post-fire restoration treatments. Noé also conducts outreach, works with partners, and pursues training opportunities.

Noé is originally from Aguascalientes, Mexico, and received their BA in Environmental Studies - Conservation Science and Policy from UC Santa Cruz. Before joining SNAP, they worked as a Resource Assistant for the Inyo National Forest. During the term, they look forward to learning and sharing knowledge regarding the reforestation framework. Noé also looks forward to creating professional connections with like-minded individuals in the field and returning to some of these planting sites to see how well the trees are doing.

It’s time to take action to make the outdoors a more welcoming place for everyone 🏕️

The California Natural Resources Agency recently released a draft strategy for their Outdoors for All initiative, detailing how public and private partners can work together to achieve equitable outdoor access for all Californians.

The Outdoors for All initiative aims to ensure that every person in California has access to parks, open space, and nature, regardless of their background or location. Public input on the draft strategy is highly encouraged so that CNRA can achieve its goals in everyone's best interest. You can give your input until July 10.

This summer, take a vacation from speeding 🚗

Take Care Tahoe is taking on traffic safety by distributing free yard signs to the public that encourage drivers to “Take it Slow, Tahoe.” Driving slowly can protect people, pets, and wildlife, and gives you more time to take in the scenery.

You can pick up a free yard sign from Take Care Tahoe at one of eight locations around the lake to encourage drivers to slow down to protect people and animals.

We’ve got some news to share about California’s progress to conserve an additional 30% of California’s land and water by 2030. 🌱

Since April 2022, California has added nearly 1,000 square miles of conserved land. This brings statewide totals to 24.4% of lands and 16.2% of coastal waters protected. While this is great news, we still have a long way to reach our 30x30 goals.

California is a leader in the international movement to protect 30% of our lands and coastal waters by 2030, and the Alliance is proud to be coordinating 30x30 efforts throughout the Sierra Nevada.
