Nature and You: Symbiosis in the soil: Trees, fungi, and their underground networks

September 28, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Most trees, especially in our Northern California forests and savannahs, need fungi on their roots to help them access water and nutrients, and to help protect them from pathogens. Many of these fungi make the familiar (and unfamiliar!) mushrooms we can spot during the wet season, from chanterelles to earth stars. But how do these fungi affect the forest as a whole? Do “mother trees” help their babies?

Our September Nature and You speaker is Dr. Laura Bogar from the Department of Plant Biology at UC Davis. In this talk, Professor Bogar will discuss some of the basic features of plant-fungal symbiosis, and will review what we know (and don’t know) about fungal networks in the soil.

This event is a Zoom Lecture, a link will be emailed to everyone who has RSVP’d on the morning of the event.
