California Central Valley Flood Control Association Invites to Attend the 2022 Flood Forum! Engineering with Nature: Role of Nature–Based Solutions in Flood Control

The Central Valley has an over 100-year history of successfully constructing and building single-purpose flood control structures, such as the Yolo Bypass dating back to 1916. Over time many existing structures and newly proposed structures are called on to perform double duty, providing public safety through flood protection while also enhancing the environment or offering recreation opportunities. In 2014 voters approved the Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure Improvement Act (Prop. 1), with $395 million for multi-benefit flood management projects that include fish and wildlife habitat enhancement. One effort responsive to this change has been the Yolo Bypass Cache Slough Partnership formed in 2016 to work on developing a program to encourage collaboration on regional solutions to implement landscape-level changes across six pillars: flood, habitat, recreation, agriculture, water supply, and water quality.

The keynote speaker at this year’s Flood Forum is the National Lead for the USACE Engineering with Nature® initiative. Dr. Todd Bridges will talk about what drives communities to take a nature-based approach on flood protection projects and how this is being successfully implemented. Following his presentation, an esteemed panel of state and local agency representatives will discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with balancing public safety improvements with advancing habitat goals.
