Willow Weaving Workshop

December 9, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Join Nick LaHaise, a beloved local artist from Sierra Valley, in weaving willow panels to shade the guests of the Nature Center! Nick LaHaise is a basket weaver, green wood worker, carpenter, chef, and teacher. He is the co-founder of Hearth Folk School in Sonoma County, a traditional craft and folk skills education center.

We will begin our willow adventure at 10am on December 2nd, at Lemon Canyon Ranch in Sierraville, where we will harvest willow for the panels, bind them into bundles and then load the bundles into trailers. Then, the next weekend at the Sierra Valley Preserve, on December 9th  at 10am, we will weave the willow onto custom-made steel panels.

The event will be held rain or shine, so be prepared with warm clothes, warm gloves and a set of your sharpest loppers (long handle, two-handed). Smaller, sharp pruners and clippers are useful too.

Warm drinks and lunch will be served for both events! While you enjoy your lunch, Nick will share more about willow and his unique art, and we’ll discuss native willow types and the importance of willow habitat and meadow restoration.
