Field Training: Fuels Treatments in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI): Lessons Learned Post Wildfire at Swanton Pacific Ranch

This is an opportunity to learn about forest health treatments, hazard tree removal, lessons learned in post-wildfire fuels treatments, and biomass removal with the goal of increasing fire resilience and enhancing forest health in the wildland-urban interface (WUI).
Want to learn more about fuel treatments on the WUI? Join us for an intriguing conversation on post wildfire forest health treatments in a field workshop on Thursday, July 27th from 9:00am-4:30pm at Cal Poly’s Swanton Pacific Ranch located in Davenport, CA. Participants will learn from staff at Swanton Pacific Ranch about how to increase the pace and scale of vegetation and fuels treatments, utilizing various funding opportunities and partnerships.
Dr. Grey Hayes, Program Director of FAVE, Research and Education Manager at Swanton Pacific Ranch and Restoration Ecologist will begin by giving the participants a historical overview of disturbance regimes, fire ecology and provide some context to the site history of the ranch. Dr. Hayes will speak to the funding streams and partnerships needed to support the work, discuss the strategy for fuels treatments and provide lessons learned in implementation of the Forest Health grant project.
Chuck Sweeney, Forest Health Technician, at Swanton Pacific Ranch will speak to the technical aspects of implementing fuels treatments, forest management and monitoring, and salvage logging after high-severity fire. He will also touch on student involvement at the ranch and how it interacts with the forest health grant.
Mark Swisher, Director at Swanton Pacific Ranch, will highlight important recovery milestones and outline project goals for the future vision of Swanton Pacific Ranch.
