Climate Change

Mountain Glaciers Shrinking Across the West
Hannah Hickey, UW News, 10/20/17

Sierra Link: Maps developed by researchers at the University of Washington provide a twice-yearly tally of roughly 1,200 mountain glaciers in the lower 48 states, down to a resolution of about 1 foot. Most of those glaciers are in Washington state, with others clustered in the Rocky Mountains of Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, and in California’s Sierra Nevada.

What’s in Store for this Winter?
Mark McLaughlin, Tahoe Weekly, 10/25/17

Sierra Link: Temperature anomalies caused by La Niña or El Niño events, coupled with atmospheric pressure changes, influence the storm-driving jet stream. Historically they lead to wetter conditions in the Pacific Northwest with drier weather in California, especially in southern California.

Forestry

How the Sierra Nevada Could Become a Polluter
Jason Alvarez, University of California, 6/15/17

Sierra Link: In a paper published recently in Scientific Reports, researchers used three climate models and data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to examine how rising global temperatures and increasingly severe wildfires will affect Sierra Nevada forests. Their conclusion: Changing conditions will turn today’s Sierra Nevada forests into tomorrow’s greenhouse gas emitters.

Help is Needed to Protect the Big Trees of the San Juan Ridge
Yuba Watershed Institute, Yuba Net, 10/31/17

Sierra Link: The ‘Inimim Forest (the community forest of the San Juan Ridge) has remnant stands of very large trees. The 2,000-acre ‘Inimim Forest is managed through a collaboration between the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Yuba Watershed Institute.

Recreation

$70 Yosemite Entrance Fee: Big Increases Proposed for National Parks
Paul Rogers, The Mercury News, 10/24/17

Sierra Link: The Trump administration has proposed a huge jump in the entrance fees of many of America’s most popular national parks — to $70 per car for Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and 14 other parks, up from $25 to $30 now.

CDFW Expanding Lands Pass Program to Dozens of Properties in 2017-18
CDFW, 10/31/17

Sierra Link: The CDFW is expanding its Lands Pass Program to 41 wildlife areas and ecological reserves this fall and winter and will soon require a CDFW lands pass of all visitors 16 or older. Those carrying a current hunting or fishing license are exempt from this new requirement. Some of these areas are in the Sierra.

Water

Effort to Steward a Rare Free-Flowing California River Gains Traction
Tom Di Liberto, News Deeply, 11/2/17

Sierra Link: Every river draining the western Sierra Nevada mountains has a major dam, with the exception of the Cosumnes. Without major dams, the Cosumnes River presents a great opportunity for restoration, which has prompted a coalition to begin a basin-scale project and a new roadmap for watershed stewardship.

Is 'Restore Hetch Hetchy' a Pipe Dream or a Living Vision?
Jay Thorwaldson, Palo Alto Online, 10/15/17

Sierra Link: A century ago John Muir fought to prevent San Francisco from damming the Hetch Hetchy Valley, roughly the northern third of Yosemite National Park. Today, some are still aggressively pushing to return the valley to its natural state by either removing the dam or at least draining the valley to restore the flora and fauna that once lived there.

Wildlife

New Laws Enhance Poaching Penalties to Better Protect Wildlife
CDFW, 10/24/17

Sierra Link: Legislation sponsored by the wildlife conservation community approved enhancements of penalties for the illegal take of trophy-class animals that reside throughout the state, including the Sierra.

Paiute Cutthroat Trout Return to Silver King Creek for First Time in 71 Years
Joe Barker, USDA

Sierra Link: In 1946, a rare species of fish, the Paiute cutthroat trout, were transplanted from Silver King Creek in California to North Fork Cottonwood Creek with little fanfare, and have not returned; until now.

Vikings Razed the Forests. Can Iceland Regrow Them?
Henry Fountain, The New York Times, 10/20/17

The country lost most of its trees more than a thousand years ago, when Viking settlers took their axes to the forests that covered one-quarter of the countryside. Now Icelanders would like to get some of those forests back, to improve and stabilize the country’s harsh soils, help agriculture and fight climate change.
