Christmas Bird Count with the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science!

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is widely regarded as the largest and oldest citizen science project in the world. Each year, from 14 December through 5 January, tens of thousands of volunteers head out into the winter to count birds for a day. This tradition goes back to 1900, and in the intervening years, these birders have built a database on bird populations that is unmatched by any other wildlife census. TINS Co-founder Will Richardson has coordinated the South Lake Tahoe CBC since 2004.

Date: December 17th, 2016
Location: Alpina Coffee Cafe, South Lake Tahoe, 8am.
Details: Group will bird at Cove East together and then split into groups to bird at other areas. A pizza party, complementary of TINS will conclude the day. Map available HERE.

15th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival: At The Edge!

2017 California Climate Change Symposium!

California Climate Change Symposium 2017 is the premier forum for the sharing of cutting-edge research addressing the impacts of climate change on the state. This research informs the state’s strategies and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to develop programs to safeguard California from a changing climate. California Climate Change Symposium 2017 is convened by California Natural Resources Agency, California Environmental Protection Agency, and the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research.

Date: Jan 25-26, 2017
Location: Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel
Details: The 2017 symposium will feature preliminary reports from California’s Fourth Climate Change Assessment, a status report on the state’s Climate Change Research Plan, as well as presentations on emerging research.

Call for Abstracts: Reclaiming the Sierra 2017 with the Sierra Fund!

Reclaiming the Sierra 2017 offers a platform for progress toward a more resilient future at the nexus of cutting edge science, forward thinking policy and state of the art technology. This event draws hundreds of leaders in the fields of science, policy, research, environmental regulation, water quality, consulting, mining, public health and environmental advocacy. The Sierra Fund invites interdisciplinary researchers to submit abstracts describing strategies for headwaters resiliency.

Consideration will be given to abstracts that address the following themes:

1. Assessment and Abatement Strategies for Environmental Toxics
2. Ecosystem Function and Resiliency
3. Policies to Promote Responsible Land Use and Management


Deadline to submit: January 31, 2017

Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training!

Our climate is changing. Do you want to make a difference? Join the Climate Reality Project for a Leadership Corps training, and work with former US Vice President Al Gore and renowned climate scientists and communicators to learn about what’s happening to our planet. California Council on Science and Technology Fellowships: Accepting Applications!

CCST is seeking scientists and engineers for a year of public service and government leadership training in Sacramento. The CCST Science Fellows program is open to those holding a PhD or equivalent degree in science and engineering, and in social science fields such as economics.
Completed applications are due on February 28th, 2017.

USDA National Conservation Innovation Grants Program - $25 million!

USDA announced funding to development and adoption of innovative approaches and technologies for conservation on agricultural lands. Proposed projects should demonstrate potential to leverage private investment to achieve air quality, forest restoration, on-farm energy efficiency and generation, and green infrastructure benefits.

US EPA: Environmental Justice 2020 Action Agenda!

The EJ 2020 Action Agenda is the U.S. EPA's strategic plan for advancing environmental justice for the years 2016-2020 and will build on the foundation established by EPA's previous plan, Plan EJ 2014, as well as decades of significant environmental justice practice by the Agency, communities, and its partners.

Climate Adaptation: The State of Practice in US Communities!

This 2016 publication provides a critical assessment of community-based adaptation to climate vulnerability and includes a series of in-depth case studies that can provide insight to community-based champions to help reduce vulnerability in their own communities and make evidence-based proposals for adaptation professionals to advance the state-of-the-practice.

Sierra Link: The Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC) Governing Board approved $3.1 million in grants for ten projects that will decrease wildfire risk, lessen tree mortality, and restore forest and watershed health in the Sierra Nevada region. Funding for these projects comes from Proposition 1, The Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure Improvement Act. Take a closer look!

Challenge to ban on dredging for gold headed to U.S. Supreme Court

Sierra Link: California's gold mining history has severely impacted the Sierra Nevada region, and we have celebrated efforts to ban suction dredge mining practices. Now it will be up to the Supreme Court of the United States to determine if the Golden State will remain true to its history.

The Historic Victory at Standing Rock

Sierra Link: This month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers legally blocked the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, denying it a needed easement to drill beneath the Missouri River. This historic victory sets a precedent for illegal land grabs against tribal nations. We celebrate this triumph with our Sierra tribes who have been in support of the North Dakota Water Protectors.

Long-sought flood control projects eased passage of California water bill

Sierra Link: Flood control concerns in the Sacramento area and Merced County helped drive a big water bill that won overwhelming congressional approval despite heated conflict over other California provisions.

New CA law redefines watersheds as natural infrastructure

Sierra Link: This year, California Assemblyman Richard Bloom authored a new state law that recognizes watersheds as natural infrastructure, making them eligible for funds that maintain the built infrastructure related to water. Projects eligible for funding under AB 2480 include controlled burns and forest thinning as well as meadow and stream channel restoration.

Petition Seeks Ban on Import of Invasive Bullfrogs Into California

Sierra Link: The Center for Biological Diversity and Save the Frogs submitted a petition to add the North American bullfrog to California's list of “restricted animals”, attempting to prevent future introductions of this destructive non-native, invasive amphibian. Bullfrogs prey upon, and compete with, California's native wildlife and play a role in the spread of disease.
