Lessons from field and remote-sensing based inquiries DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Saba will be talking about the two manuscripts from her Master’s work\, which focuses on updating and calibrating measurements between CBI\, RdNBR\, and individual field-based severity metrics throughout the Interior Pacific Northwest. The first key finding is that CBI does not always capture extreme measures of fire severity and that some aggregate measures vary based on pre-fire forest condition. Another key finding is that the severity of a first entry fire impacts burn severity of subsequent fires in ways that are not always captured with commonly used indices like RdNBR\, particularly surface fire effects. A data paper detailing the relationships (crosswalks) between RdNBR/RBR/dNBR and basal area loss and canopy cover loss is a forthcoming project as a result of this research. \nClick here for more information and to register. Water in California is beginning to grab the attention it deserved long ago as the once waterlogged landscape is unrecognizable farmlands\, leveed deltas\, and expanded deserts. How did California’s water go unnoticed for so long only to become a hot topic? \nThis talk will overview the ties between California’s culture and how it revolves around water & its plants and how the relationship has evolved over the past couple hundred years. Can California balance the needs of the citizens\, the landscape\, and the economy? This question may not be answered in this talk but insights and realistic perspectives will be given and discussed that may help open a productive dialogue. \nAbout our Speaker\, Tina Donnelly\nTina has lived in California’s Central Valley most of her life and has been in the Natural Resources Management field for over ten years. Tina has been presenting on Water Resources Management among other topics to youth all over the state to help future generations form their own opinions by giving them information they may not have had prior access to. \nClick here for more information and to register. As the Court said in a 2014 opinion upholding power plant emissions requirements\, “under Chevron\, we read Congress’ silence as a delegation of authority to EPA to select among reasonable options.” Several Justices currently on the Court have criticized Chevron\, arguing that the doctrine improperly takes away decision-making power from judges and gives it to “bureaucrats\,” as Justice Gorsuch said in a recent dissent. Last summer the Court held that regulations with broad impacts cannot be grounded in vague provisions in a statute. With the Loper Bright and Relentless cases this term\, the Court could eliminate or revise the Chevron Doctrine and sharply reduce judicial deference to agency scientific and technical expertise. When the Chevron cases are considered alongside other cases before the Court\, this term could result in sweeping changes to the way federal environmental requirements are established and enforced. \nOral arguments in Loper Bright and Relentless are scheduled for January 17\, 2024. As a result\, this webinar will provide an early assessment of what is at stake\, potential outcomes\, and impressions from the Supreme Court arguments. \nClick here for more information and to register. Communicating about introduced species and their impacts in ways that engage and empower audiences can be challenging but is necessary to enable informed decision making. \nPublic trust can be weakened if scientists\, educators\, or natural resource practitioners focus on value-laden\, subjective language at the expense of objective facts when describing the impacts of invasive plants. Similarly\, communication about introduced species can unintentionally lead to xenophobic attitudes toward nature and culture alike. These aspects of invasive species messaging have been largely overlooked\, especially in museums\, nature centers\, and other institutions where public-facing messages have potential to influence local culture and opinions. \nThis webinar will present an overview of a recent\, ongoing project at Carnegie Museum of Natural History on invasive plants and seek participant feedback and discussion on best practices for effectively and inclusively communicating about invasive plants to diverse audiences. This webinar will collaboratively explore the direction of this project\, which will later culminate with outreach materials and an exhibit on plant invasion. \nClick here for more information and to register.
