News: AmeriCorps Week Recap

This year, during AmeriCorps Week, we recognize and thank the AmeriCorps members who raise their hands to help when needed. From a pioneering group of 20,000 Americans who first raised their hands to serve, AmeriCorps has grown into a nationwide force for positive change, making a difference in lives.
Join with us as we celebrate and offer thanks to members, volunteers, and alumni who have committed billions of hours of results-driven service, creating lasting impact in communities nationwide.

Check out some great AmeriCorps stories from members and alumni:

“Seeing firsthand how our efforts made the trail more accessible and enjoyable for others was incredibly fulfilling and a reminder of the lasting impact of conservation work.” Angela spent her time in service helping to widen and maintain trails to increase accessibility for recreational activities in southern Nevada. – Angela Bartlett, NCC Alumni USFS Trail Maintenance

“By leveraging my passion for technology, I have helped bridge the digital divide in my community, teaching essential computer skills and fostering digital literacy.” Elijah is using his passion for technology to promote community engagement, as well as taking on more leadership roles with confidence through AmeriCorps. – Elijah Figgers, Strong Future Tech Specialist, Member

“The opportunity to have [United Way] AmeriCorps Mentors at our school has been incredibly valuable. Due to staffing shortages, we were unable to provide this level of intervention support to many of our students. Additionally, COVID has created significant reading gaps, and this program has effectively targeted phonemic awareness skills that are not as heavily emphasized in our regular curriculum. These mentors have been a tremendous asset to our students and school community!” — Ashley O., Principal, Sun Valley Elementary School

Last year more than 1,800 Americans of all ages and backgrounds united to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and expand opportunity through national service in Nevada. AmeriCorps invested more than $10.1 million in federal funding to support cost-effective community solutions, working hand in hand with local partners to empower individuals to help communities tackle their toughest challenges.

AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers are preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s jobs, connecting veterans to services, fighting the opioid epidemic, helping older adults age with dignity, rebuilding communities after disasters, and improving the physical and mental well-being of Americans nationwide. This AmeriCorps Week there is so much to celebrate and we are proud to share that #AmeriCorpsWorks in Nevada!
