Sage-Grouse Specialist – Nexus Environmental Consultants, Inc.

Position Announcement:

Nexus is seeking an experienced Sage-Grouse Specialist for work in Northern Nevada. Duties would include, but not be limited to, assisting with State of Nevada Conservation Credit System (CCS) projects, conducting biological surveys, leading biological survey teams (virtually and in the field), and preparing technical documents pertaining to sage-grouse. Other tasks may be included based on workload and may pertain to other flora and fauna species.

Work Duties:

  • Routinely assist in the management/oversight of GIS, field verification, and final calculations for CCS projects.
  • Routinely assist in the management/oversight of sage-grouse lek monitoring projects, including occasional field work and reporting.
  • Routinely prepare technical documents including, but not limited to, biological work plans, survey results reports, and biological specialist reports for NEPA documents for wildlife species, including but not limited to sage-grouse.
  • Occasionally lead and conduct surveys for vegetation including, but not limited to, vegetation community mapping, noxious/invasive weed surveys, special status plant surveys, etc.
  • Occasionally lead and/or conduct surveys for raptors, migratory birds, mammals, etc.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology or ecology required. Graduated degree related to wildlife a plus.
  • Three to five years of previous experience conducting GIS, field verification, final calculations, and managing projects within the CCS required.
  • Three to five years of previous experience conducting vegetation inventory, including performing shrub, forb, and grass identification to the species level required.
  • Experience authoring National Environmental Policy Act document sections and/or specialist reports on Environmental Impact Statement-level documents required.
  • Seven to ten years of wildlife survey field experience required.
  • Supervisory and project management experience a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to work independently and with others required.
  • Willingness to complete field work up to 20 percent of the time.
  • Ability to hike for extended periods of time (up to 10 miles per day) required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs required.
  • Ability to work remotely and stay motivated and on task required.
  • Commitment to safety and Nexus safety protocols and standards required.
  • Work would be located primarily in northern Nevada with the potential for some work and/or meetings in other states, as needed.
