Description
- DEFINITION
As a physical presence throughout the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mono County, and surrounding National Forest, an Outdoor Recreation Host’s primary responsibility is to help recreators enjoy the Eastern Sierra. Hosts are tasked with providing accurate and current information, sharing their knowledge of the local geography, collecting visitor data, reporting maintenance issues, and offering basic first aid supplies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Outdoor Recreation Coordinator and Outdoor Recreation Manager, or designee. -
Examples of Duties
- Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Engage with the public, answer questions, clarify misinformation, and distribute informational handouts as needed.
- Share local knowledge about the area or specific trails that can be accessed from your given location.
- Station at designated fixed locations and/or ride/walk specific trails/buses interacting with users.
- Collect and report information such as user interactions, maintenance issues, general observations and assistance administered.
- Offer first aid supplies and offer to call for more definitive help. The trail user or recreator will administer their own first aid.
- Perform general maintenance and cleaning as needed.
- Drive vehicles used to transport materials, tools, and equipment as needed.
- Perform related duties as assigned in support of Town of Mammoth Lakes and Office of Outdoor Recreation activities, which may include both in-office and field work assignments.
- Encourage involvement in recreational programs, activities, and special events by participating in recreational activities.

- Knowledge of:
- Operating principles of recreational activities.
- Occupational hazard and safety precautions.
- Safe work practices.

- Work independently and be self-motivated.
- Work with others as part of a team.
- Communicate clearly and concisely and carry out oral and written instructions.
- React with good judgement in emergency situations.
- Use a variety of maintenance equipment and materials.
- Maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Be present and available for work.
- Work an irregular schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Education:A High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required. Specialized training/experience in basic first aid, and demonstrated local geographic knowledge is preferred.Experience:Entry-level position, all qualified candidates will be considered. Familiarity with the Mammoth Lakes Trail System, Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mono County, and Inyo National Forest programs and projects, as well as established experience of local flora, fauna, history, culture, Leave No Trace principles, and fire restrictions is preferred.Licenses:Possession of, or ability to obtain within the state-required timeframe of ten (10) days within residency, a valid State of California Class C Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.Must pass an appropriate background check prior to the hire date.Possession of, or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe as set forth by the Town, AED/CPR and First Aid certifications. -

This at-will position is part-time, with no benefits other than those required by state and federal law. Either the employee or the Town may terminate employment at any time for any reason, with or without cause.
Part-time positions carry a maximum of 960 total paid hours per fiscal year and are not a guarantee of future employment with the Town of Mammoth Lakes.
All Employment is conditioned on the results of applicable pre-employment checks.
Compensation shown on this posting is the entire pay scale, in compliance with the California Equal Pay Act. However, please note that, “An employee will be appointed at the minimum rate for the class…Advancements in salary shall be based on a merit system…Step A [the minimum rate] will be the starting hiring rate…Employees shall be eligible for advancement to steps within the salary range upon satisfactory completion of an annual performance evaluation.” (Town of Mammoth Lakes Personnel Rules, Articles 4.5, 4.7, and 4.8)
