SUMMARY:TERC CIRC(umnavigation) 2024
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the summer beauty of Lake Tahoe and raise awareness of threats to the lake\, we welcome everyone to join us for the fourth annual Circumnavigation of Lake Tahoe for Science\, a seven-day kayaking journey dubbed TERC CIRC. The event\, which combines citizen science with fundraising for the Center\, will run from June 17 to June 21. It’s a unique combination of fun\, adventure\, science and sociability. \nTERC CIRC 4 will showcase TERC’s ongoing research in the Lake Tahoe Basin while at the same time directly allowing participants to experience the lake at water level. The event offers a unique opportunity to connect with the lake\, conduct science measurements along the way and feel the spirit of camaraderie with like-minded paddlers. “The best way to truly understand the fragile beauty of Lake Tahoe is to be on the water in a kayak and slowly progress around the shore. Every part of the lake is unique\, and they all have different challenges\,” according to Geoffrey Schladow\, director of TERC. \nAll paddlers that are interested in the event have the option to choose from seven separate day trip segments. Each day will feature 6-13 miles of spectacular shoreline paddling through the crystal blue waters of the lake. Against the backdrop of this pristine landscape\, paddlers will hear from TERC scientists\, will use a cellphone app to record their observations\, and learn how a range of different measurements are made. \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Collaboration\, Connection\, and Commitment: Successes from a Case Study in Fuels Reduction
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is an opportunity for participants to increase their understanding of how to plan\, fund\, and implement fuels reduction programs and projects through a successful case study. We will highlight a partnership between a California Utility and a Federally Recognized Tribe to both increase wildfire resiliency and develop capacity with a focus on Collaboration\, Connection\, and Commitment. \nThe Pala Band of Mission Indians and San Diego Gas & Electric embarked on a multiyear wildfire mitigation project which focused on reducing hazardous fuels surrounding select utility poles on tribal land while maintaining ecologically important native habitat. Natural Resource Director\, Jeremy Zagarella\, and Fuels Management Project Manager\, Ryan White\, will be discussing the background\, preparation\, and implementation of a successful collaborative project. This project was specifically structured to ensure that flame length and height\, radiant heat\, and particulate carbon were reduced while also maintaining some percentage of the ecological services provided by adjacent habitat. They will explain how this relationship was established. Collaboration\, Connection\, and Commitment are the key components that lead to a successful project with the hopes that others can do similar projects. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:How Dirty is Your Watershed? Sediment and Turbidity TMDL Compliance Planning
DESCRIPTION:Watersheds make and are made by erosional processes on the land. Riverine systems derive multiple benefits from natural episodic sediment delivery\, while chronic anthropogenic (management-related) sedimentation can negatively impact watershed health\, aquatic species\, and water quality. Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) set a threshold for the amount of a particular pollutant\, like sediment and turbidity\, that can be delivered to a river system without impairing the “beneficial uses” of the waters. \nParticipants in this webinar will learn about the TMDL process\, from listing a watershed as impaired to performing a sediment source analysis to determine what can be considered natural “background” sediments and what are “management-related” sediments to developing BMPs for the land practices contributing sediment. This will include watershed-scale practices to move the entire watershed towards water quality recovery and site-scale BMPs meeting the requirements of the CA CGP. \nThe course will highlight two ground-breaking TMDL case studies in Northern California\, including 1) the Mad River TMDL\, which was set forth by the Federal EPA for the entire watershed\, and the Mad River TMDL Compliance Plan\, which was developed through a landowner-based process guided by a local non-profit agency; and 2) the Elk River TMDL and TMDL Compliance Plan\, which were set forth by the CA Regional Water Quality Control Board for a partitioned reach of the watershed. \nClick here for more information.
