SUMMARY:Wild and Scenic Film Festival On Tour
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Sierra Nevada Alliance has been a host of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour since 2006. The flagship festival hosted by the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) takes place in winter and then hits the road to visit local communities! SUMMARY:Sierra College Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nEarth Day is an international celebration observed each year to demonstrate support for environmental protection\, stewardship\, and care for the systems that sustain all life. Celebrated in more than 190 countries\, Earth Day reminds us that the health of our planet and the well-being of our communities are deeply interconnected. While the modern Earth Day movement began in 1970\, cultures around the world have honored the Earth—and our responsibilities to one another—for millennia. \nThis year’s theme\, Rooted in Justice\, Growing Together\, centers environmental action within the broader context of social justice\, community resilience\, and collective care. Just as healthy ecosystems depend on strong roots\, diverse communities\, and reciprocal relationships\, a sustainable future requires equity\, inclusion\, and shared responsibility. Environmental challenges do not impact all communities equally—and meaningful solutions must be grounded in justice\, community voices\, and collaboration. \nThe 2026 Sierra College Earth Day celebration invites participants to reflect on how care for the Earth and care for people are inseparable. Together\, we will explore how community-based action\, environmental justice\, and collective stewardship can help us not only endure challenges—but grow through them. When communities are pushed aside\, overlooked\, or “buried\,” they persist\, adapt\, and rise—like seeds finding their way toward the light. \nOrganized by the Environmentally Concerned Organization of Students (ECOS) Club\, the Associated Students of Sierra College (ASSC)\, the Student Engagement Centers (SEC)\, and the Earth Day Committee\, Sierra College’s Earth Day celebration has been a cornerstone of campus and community life for more than 30 years. \n\n\nEvent Purpose \n\nThis free\, public event welcomes Sierra College students\, faculty\, staff\, and community members for a day of learning\, connection\, and action. Together\, we aim to: \nCelebrate the natural world and the diverse communities that depend on and care for it \nDeepen understanding of environmental justice and how environmental harms and benefits are distributed \nEmphasize reciprocity—recognizing that what we take\, protect\, and restore shapes the future for all life \nShare practical\, justice-centered actions that reduce harm and strengthen community resilience \nFoster collaboration across students\, educators\, and community partners working toward a more just and sustainable future \n  \nGuided by Indigenous knowledge systems\, including the Seventh Generation Principle\, we are reminded that the choices we make today should support a thriving world seven generations into the future. \n\nKey Highlights\nWorkshops & Activities:\nInteractive sessions on themes such as environmental justice\, climate resilience\, sustainable food systems\, renewable energy\, and community-based solutions. \nGuest Speakers:\nEnvironmental advocates\, educators\, and community leaders will share insights on justice-centered environmental work and collective action. \nStudent Projects:\nInnovative and inspiring student-led projects addressing environmental challenges through equity\, creativity\, and collaboration. \nCommunity Partners:\nEngage with local organizations and initiatives rooted in environmental stewardship\, social justice\, and community care. \n\n\n\nFeatured Quote \n\n“Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal\, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth\, the earth heals us.”\n— Robin Wall Kimmerer\, Braiding Sweetgrass \n\n\n\nCall to Action \n\nJoin us as we gather—rooted in justice and growing together—to celebrate Earth Day 2026 at Sierra College. Through learning\, listening\, and action\, we can cultivate a future where both people and planet thrive. Mark your calendar and be part of a community committed to care\, resilience\, and collective growth. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:River Canyon Spring Roadside Clean-up
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nIn collaboration with CalTrans\, the Upper Merced River Watershed Council has adopted a 3-mile stretch of Highway 140 in the Merced River Canyon\, from Slate Creek Bridge to Miller Gulch. We’ll meet at the Briceburg parking area and then collect trash\, pick up recyclables–and generally make our river a healthier\, happier place. \nHow it works: \nGroups will carpool to the clean-up site. Safety is our #1 priority. Clean-up teams are given safety instructions and must wear safety vests and hard hats. Depending on the number in our clean-up group\, a typical clean-up session is about 2-3 hours to do our designated stretch. \nParticipants must be at least 16 years old. Since CalTrans considers 16 and 17 year-olds as minors\, one adult supervisor must be present at the work site for every 5 minors participating (adult supervisor must be 21 years of age). \nWe’ll provide all of the safety gear. \nWhat to bring: \nWear close-toed shoes or boots\, long pants\, and preferably long-sleeved shirt. \nWater for at least 3 hours. \nBring a hat\, sunglasses\, sunscreen. \nFor more information\, email us at mercedwatershed@gmail.com \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Water Quality Monitoring Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]WANTED: CITIZEN SCIENTIST WATER QUALITY MONITORS \nWant to help us collect water quality data on the Merced River? Join us for a morning of VOLUNTEER TRAINING! Each quarter\, dedicated volunteers head out to their “adopted” spot on the river to take samples\, conduct monitoring\, collect data\, and generally enjoy time connecting with the river. All in all\, it takes about 45 minutes from start to finish. \nWE PROVIDE everything you’ll need–including monitoring equipment\, a first aid kit\, air temp thermometer\, and even a trash bag–for your citizen science experience. \nWe currently monitor along 5 identified sites\, and we appreciate when volunteers pick a site that becomes “theirs.” Monitoring takes place over a scheduled weekend window\, so once you are trained\, you have the flexibility of picking the day that is convenient for you to go out on the river. Once trained\, you pick up your equipment box at Briceburg\, then head out to the river for monitoring. When you are finished\, you bring your equipment box back to the pick-up location. \nFor your first monitoring experience\, we invite you to join us for a VOLUNTEER TRAINING DAY on Saturday\, May 16th at 10am at Briceburg. You will join other volunteers to learn why we monitor water quality\, safety on the river\, orientation to the equipment\, and give you hands-on experience in how to monitor and record data. If you have a preference for which one of our sites you would like to “adopt\,” we’ll talk about that\, too. \nWHAT TO BRING: \nWe won’t wade into the river\, but we will be working at the river’s edge. Wear sturdy shoes\, boots\, or other footwear that you don’t mind getting wet. \nWe’ll be out there rain or shine. Come prepared for any weather eventuality\, especially a hat and sunscreen. \nDrinking water and snacks.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:EcoTour: Hike\, Bite and Delight at the Deer Creek Preserve
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nHiking Adventure at the Deer Creek Preserve\n\nJoin NCRLT staff for a private 3-mile hiking tour through the breathtaking beauty of Deer Creek Preserve\, our hidden gem. This adventurous journey will lead you deep into the majestic canyon\, where the purifying flows of Deer Creek wind through untouched landscapes. \nThe adventure begins at 8am at the Chico Park & Ride. We will meet there and board a van for the 50-minute drive to the Deer Creek Trailhead\, where Deer Creek crosses HWY 32. We will hike the Deer Creek Trail from the trailhead to where the trail crosses K-line road\, stopping to take in the view\, wildlife\, and flowers. We will enjoy a picnic of locally-sourced fare and you’ll receive a commemorative photo book with adventure memories (provided after the tour). Our tour concludes roughly 3 miles downstream\, where our ride awaits. \nThe hiking trail is well maintained though there are a few areas that are narrow and may have loose rocks. This is a moderate level hike with little elevation gain. Dress in layers\, appropriate footwear (hiking boots/athletic shoes)\, and bring water. \nIncluded: round-trip transportation from Chico Park & Ride\, locally sourced picnic\, commemorative photo book. \nThis event is rain or shine. SUMMARY:California Naturalist Immersive Course
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Since 2012\, this course has used education and service to inspire and empower individuals to create more resilient communities and ecosystems by becoming a certified California Naturalist. Aspiring Naturalists enroll in a 40-hour course that combines classroom and field experience in science\, problem-solving\, communication training and community service. Class and field sessions are taught by local experts in the fields of: ecology\, geology\, plants\, animals\, climate\, global environmental issues\, energy\, water\, forests\, and interpretation. Participants gain knowledge about the unique natural history of California with a focus on the Northern Sierras and Lake Tahoe Basin. \n  \nProgram Goals\nTo promote environmental literacy and stewardship of California’s natural resources \nTo increase participation in resource conservation and community science projects throughout the state \nTo develop a core constituency of committed and educated citizens willing and able to participate in resource conservation\, preservation\, and restoration efforts \nTo provide participants with the knowledge\, skills\, and confidence they need to educate others and participate in many aspects of resource management\, such as public education\, resource planning\, and public decision-making \nTo provide the communication experience and critical thinking skills necessary to grow a base that supports environmental protection and sustainable growth in California \nTo support partner organizations as they implement the program \nBenefits to the Participant\nA new appreciation for and knowledge of California’s unique ecology and natural history \nOpportunities for personal and professional growth \nNew skills for volunteer and professional enrichment \nSpecial knowledge of and access to local resources\, ecology\, and natural areas \nAccess to new venues for creative and hobby activities such as bird watching\, sketching\, photography\, etc. \nFellowship from other California Naturalist participants throughout the state \nThe excitement of being part of the venerable tradition of naturalists throughout history and an innovative new program for natural resource stewardship. \nCourse Format\nThis One-Week Adult Immersion Course includes 40 hours of classroom and field courses during a residential week at the Field Station. The 2026 program dates are Saturday\, June 21st to Sunday\, June 27th. \nFees\nThe program costs $990 and includes all classes\, food\, and lodging at Sagehen Field Station. \nHousing Options\nShared cabins are available for course participants. There are no private rooms at the field station\, but participants may bring a tent and camp on-site if preferred. There is no discount for camping\, since you will still be using all other station facilities. Course participants may not cook for themselves\, nor opt out of catering. Please note dietary preferences on the registration form. Hotels in nearby Truckee\, CA are an option for participants who require more amenities\, but travel time of at least 1/2-hour each way will take away from valuable informal networking and field experience\, not to mention sleep. The course consists of very full days and summer road work delays are always a factor\, so we discourage this option. \nPack list\nIn addition to course materials described below\, see our list of what you need to bring for your stay at Sagehen. \nCourse Textbook and Other Required Materials\nStudents need to purchase a field journal and the course text: The California Naturalist Handbook (30% discount code here). Please complete pre-course reading assignments: there will not be enough free time during the course to catch up from behind! Students should bring their textbook and field journal to every class and field trip session. Please bring your smartphone with the iNaturalist app installed and activated with your account. Participants may also find a small 10x hand lens and binoculars useful\, but they are not required. \nMore information\nGetting to Sagehen\, what to pack\, FAQs \nLearn more about the California Naturalist program \nAn article about the program \nSagehen’s California Naturalist project on iNaturalist \nQuestions?\nContact the Course Coordinator: Lynn Hori (email: lynnhori@gmail.com) \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
