SUMMARY:Sierra Nevada Alliance May Webinar: Tom Smith presents "Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog (Rana sierrae)"
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our Monthly Webinar on May 8th at 11 am Featuring Tom Smith with the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory. \nDuring this webinar\, we will be learning about: \nMountain yellow-legged frogs were ubiquitous and abundant in Sierra Nevada lakes\, ponds\, and streams\, prior to the introduction of non-native predators (trout) and emergence of infectious disease (the amphibian chytrid fungus). Although wildlife managers have restored some frog habitat to the historic fishless state and frogs have responded positively\, mountain yellow-legged frogs continue to decline due to disease. Over almost two decades\, our research has documented the spread of this disease and its impacts on mountain yellow-legged frog populations throughout the Sierra Nevada. More recently\, our research focus has shifted to developing tools to help frog populations recover despite the presence of disease. These include translocations of disease-resistant frogs\, captive rearing\, and treatment of disease in the field. Success with some of these tools give us hope that mountain yellow-legged frogs will continue to occupy Sierra lakes\, well into our future.\n\nphoto credit: Roland Knapp

SUMMARY:Rivers Lab: The Book Club for River Geeks
DESCRIPTION:The South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) typically hosts Rivers Lab\, a monthly scientific report book club\, January through June. However\, along with many other events\, the March Rivers Lab was cancelled. In an effort to bring this event back and bring the community together\, this April SYRCL will be hosting a virtual Rivers Lab! Instead of meeting in the conference room\, we will be meeting online via Zoom\, a video conference app. \nFor those who aren’t familiar\, Rivers Lab is a paper reading and discussion group assembled so that we can\, as a community of river lovers practice scientific literacy. Our goals are to break down the prestigious walls of academic papers in order to learn more about the ecosystems for which we care. Rivers Lab provides a chance to ask questions\, discuss\, and enjoy each other’s company. \nParticipants receive scientific literature ahead of time\, and then convene during the lunch hour to discuss the topics and gain insights from the wisdom of the group. From novice to professional\, and everywhere in between\, attendees have the opportunity to further their knowledge on subjects of mutual interest\, and share different perspectives and interpretations around a particular issue. \nThis month we will be discussing two related papers: a news article about how climate change is negatively affective newts in Southern California\, and a scientific report on which the news article is based. Articles can be found here: https://yubariver.org/event/rivers-lab-the-book-club-for-river-geeks-9/ \nRivers Lab is a no pressure environment and a great way to learn more about the ecosystems surrounding us by reading relevant scientific literature. Encourage your friends to sign up – the more diversity of thought\, the merrier! \nHere’s how Rivers Lab will work this April:\n1) We will meet from 12:00 – 1:30 pm on Thursday\, April 30th on the video conference app\, Zoom. (Note the changed time!)\n2) Zoom invitations will be sent via the Rivers Lab email invitation.\n3) Be prepared by reading the papers beforehand.\n4) Be on time\, log in a few minutes early even! \nIf you are able\, please have the following items available:\n+ A copy of the paper (hard or online)\n+ Paper / pens / laptop / tablet for taking notes\n+ Questions\, comments\, critiques\, compliments about the paper\n+ Ideas for future topics and discussions\n+ A readiness to practice scientific literacy with your community! \nIf you want to join the email list and participate in Rivers Lab\, or if you have any questions\, please contact Mary McDonnell at mary@yubariver.org.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Backyard BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:So\, you’ve seen an event calling for people to go outside and participate in a BioBlitz. Cool\, sounds like fun! Wait… What even is a BioBlitz? \nBioBlitz: an intense biological survey occurring with particular time and area constraints with the goal of identifying all possible species that may exist in the given area. \nBioBlitzes are powerful citizen science tools that can add a wealth of knowledge to what we already know about our ecosystems. By using a large group of people to record observations\, more data can be collected at once than would be during a traditional biological survey. Scientists can then use this data to learn more about the species in the area surveyed\, such as the abundance of a certain animal\, or how many invasive species are present. \nJoin the BioBlitz\, in your own backyard on Earth Day\, Wednesday\, April 22. \nDetails at: https://yubariver.org/bioblitz/
