SUMMARY:Summer Speaker Series: Sub-hallucinogenic Doses of Psychedelics May Offer New Treatments for Depression\, Related Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Psychedelic drugs could treat mental illness by rapidly rebuilding connections between nerve cells. New findings (published Feb. 17\, 2023 in Science) from researchers at the UC Davis Institute for Psychedelics and Neurotherapeutics will help guide efforts to discover new drugs for depression\, PTSD and other disorders. Drugs such as LSD\, MDMA and psilocybin show great promise for treating a wide range of mental disorders that are characterized by a loss of neural connections. In laboratory studies\, a single dose of these drugs can cause rapid growth of new dendrites — branches — from nerve cells\, and formation of new spines on those dendrites. David Olson\, director of the newly formed UC Davis Institute for Psychedelics and Neurotherapeutics\, calls this group of drugs “psychoplastogens” because of their ability to regrow and remodel connections in the brain. \nRead more here. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:Thompson Creek Rafting Trip with Siskiyou Land Trust
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Land Trust’s Annual Rafting Fundraiser Trip is scheduled for Friday\, June 2\, 2023! \nMeet at 9:00 am at the Sluice Box River Access just downstream from the community of Seiad Valley. \nThe group will raft through the morning on a fun and absolutely lovely class II-III (“easy”) section of the Klamath River eight miles down to Thompson Creek. The requested minimum donation of $85 per person will benefit the work of SLT. Larger donations are always appreciated. Children aged 9 and above accompanied by a parent are welcome. \n\nPlease bring your own lunch in a hard\, water-and-smoosh-proof container! Lunchtime will be in the shade along the banks of Thompson Creek. SLT is fortunate to have been invited again to visit the 66-acre Thompson Creek property\, about a quarter-mile walk from our riverside picnic spot. This beautiful land is a Siskiyou Land Trust conservation easement where the pure cold waters of Thompson Creek are permanently protected. The group will return to the rafts for the afternoon conclusion of the float down to Seattle Creek River Access\, with take-out around 4 pm. \nOnce you complete your donation\, SLT will send you an email confirming your place on the trip\, a map to get to the put-in (plan on 2 hours driving time from Mt. Shasta)\, and suggestions on what to wear and bring for personal gear during the day. SLT will supply life jackets\, rafting equipment\, and experienced river guides. \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:California Invasive Species Action Week
DESCRIPTION:The goals of the California Invasive Species Action Week (CISAW) are to increase public awareness of invasive species issues and promote public participation in the fight against California’s invasive species and their impacts on our natural resources. \nPrevention is the most effective strategy in managing invasive species. However\, hundreds of invasive plants and animals have already established in California and are rapidly spreading each year. These invaders are negatively impacting our waters\, our native plants and animals (some of them rare\, threatened\, or endangered)\, our agriculture\, our health\, our economy\, and our favorite recreational places. Help us celebrate California’s Invasive Species Action Week\, and more importantly\, help stop the spread of invasive species\, by volunteering to take action. \nHosting an in-person or virtual event? Submit your event information for our statewide schedule! \nDownload the Art and Video Contest flyer here. \nClick here for more information and to register. \n
