SUMMARY:Broom Battle!
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Join Placer Land Trust for a Broom Battle! \nDate/Time:  Saturday\, January 24\, 2026\, 9:00am – 12:00pm \nLocation: Canyon View Preserve – learn more about the preserve here \nAbout this event: We’re doing it again! Placer Land Trust needs help removing an aggressive invader from Canyon View Preserve! Brooms (French\, Scotch\, Spanish\, etc.) are a group of shrubs native to parts of Africa and Europe and have been spreading rapidly throughout many parts of the U.S. They are such successful invasive species not only because they grow rapidly\, but each plant can also produce thousands of seeds that remain viable in the soil for many years. In addition to out-competing other native plant species\, broom is also highly flammable\, greatly increasing the risk of spreading a wildfire. \nWe will be removing the broom by pulling by hand or with tools\, and by cutting.  We’d love your help\, so please sign up! The activities are best suited for adults and youth ages 10 and up. Any minor must be accompanied by a supervising adult. \nMore details\, directions to the Preserve\, and a list of what to bring will be emailed after registration. Check your spam folder if you do not receive the email within 15 minutes of registering. \n\nRegister\n\n\nPlease complete registration by the Friday before the event. One registration per participant. Adult Parent/Guardian signature is required for children under 18. \nIf you have any questions please contact Eden Rock by email or by phone at 530-887-9222 x 105. \n(Curious what’s involved in this activity? Check out this episode of Gettin’ Out With Gary!)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Scaling Wetland Intelligence with GeoAI: Tools\, Trends\, and a National Vision
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) is the most authoritative national dataset for wetlands\, yet in many areas its coverage is decades old. Recent policy changes\, including the Sackett v. EPA decision\, place greater responsibility on states to develop strategies for protecting wetland resources. In this webinar\, you’ll learn how the state of Tennessee partnered with Skytec to enhance Esri’s Wetland Identification Model (WIM) with advanced GeoAI and cloud computing to produce more accurate\, scalable wetland predictions. We’ll also cover tools to help states get started\, how these efforts align with emerging policy trends\, and a vision for scaling this approach nationally. Join us to see how these innovations help states make informed\, data-driven decisions for conservation\, permitting\, and land-use planning. \nSunny Fleming is Esri’s industry lead for the domains of environment\, conservation\, and natural resources. Throughout her career\, she has applied GIS concepts and technology to environmental policy\, conservation\, and natural resources\, from monitoring species in the field to helping state parks manage assets and assess their economic impacts. She continues to pursue her passion for the environment by helping industry leaders streamline and improve their work with GIS technology\, whether in the field or in the office\, and whether setting policy or managing wildlife and resources. \nAndy Carroll is a Co-Founder and CTO at Skytec\, a remote sensing and geospatial technology company specializing in the application of satellite-based remote monitoring and spatial data analytics for natural resource management. Prior to Skytec\, Andy managed and directed the Interdisciplinary Geospatial Technology Lab at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and served as a Project Manager at the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Andy is a licensed Professional Geologist\, a certified GIS Professional and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Lyndhurst Foundation and the Appalachian Carbon Exchange. \n \nA Certificate of Attendance to be used toward Continuing Education Credits is available when participating in NAWM’s live webinars. All NAWM members receive free Certificates of Attendance for webinars. Non-Members who request a certificate will be charged a processing fee of $25.00. All Certificates must be claimed no later than 60 days from the live presentation. Certificates are not available for viewing recorded webinars. More information is available here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Water Quality Monitoring Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nWANTED: CITIZEN SCIENTIST WATER QUALITY MONITORS \nWe are kicking off our 2026 calendar of monitoring with a VOLUNTEER TRAINING DAY! Each quarter\, dedicated volunteers head out to their “adopted” spot on the river to take samples\, conduct monitoring\, collect data\, and generally enjoy time connecting with the river. All in all\, it takes about an hour from start to finish.  \nWE PROVIDE everything you’ll need–including  monitoring equipment\, a first aid kit\, air temp thermometer\, and even a trash bag–for your citizen science experience.  \nWe currently monitor along 4 identified sites\, and we appreciate when volunteers pick a site that becomes “theirs.” Monitoring takes place over a scheduled weekend window\, so once you are trained\, you have the flexibility of picking the day that is convenient for you to go out on the river. Once trained\, you pick up your equipment box at Briceburg\, then head out to the river for monitoring. When you are finished\, you bring your equipment box back to the pick-up location. \nFor your first monitoring experience\, we invite you to join us for a VOLUNTEER TRAINING DAY on Saturday\, February 14th at 10am at Briceburg. You will join other volunteers to learn why we monitor water quality\, safety on the river\, orientation to the equipment\, and give you hands-on experience in how to monitor and record data. If you have a preference for which one of our sites you would like to “adopt\,” we’ll talk about that\, too. \nWHAT TO BRING: \nWe won’t wade into the river\, but we will be working at the river’s edge. Wear sturdy shoes\, boots\, or other footwear that you don’t mind getting wet. \nWe’ll be out there rain or shine. Come prepared for any weather eventuality\, especially a hat and sunscreen. \nDrinking water and snacks. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Beneath the Surface: What Lakes Reveal About a Warming World
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Lakes around the world are changing at unprecedented rates\, offering some of the clearest signals of a warming planet. In this lecture\, freshwater ecologist Dr. Catherine O’Reilly will explore how long-term lake monitoring\, satellite observations\, and global data synthesis are transforming our understanding of freshwater resilience and vulnerability. Drawing on research from Lake Tanganyika—where her work provided the first evidence of how global warming affects fisheries and food security —Dr. O’Reilly will highlight how shifts in lake temperature\, water clarity\, and productivity extend far beyond individual watersheds and reflect broad climatic trends. \nParticipants will gain insight into how lakes function as sentinels of climate change\, what current global datasets reveal about accelerating ecological change\, and how communities and resource managers can use lake data to anticipate impacts on water quality\, biodiversity\, and livelihoods. Dr. O’Reilly will also discuss the importance of citizen science\, open data networks\, and international collaboration in building the next generation of freshwater science. \nEngaging and evidence-driven\, this talk will illuminate the critical role lakes play in tracking environmental change\, as well as how we can change our management approaches and increase protection of freshwater resources for a sustainable future. \nCatherine O’Reilly\, Ph.D. is a globally recognized aquatic ecologist\, director of the Large Lakes Observatory (LLO)\, and faculty member in the Earth & Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). Her research examines how freshwater ecosystems respond to environmental change. She is internationally recognized for her work on Lake Tanganyika\, where she documented the impacts of climate warming on lake productivity and fisheries. Dr. O’Reilly has contributed to global lake monitoring networks\, served as a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)\, and published widely on lake ecology\, climate change\, and freshwater sustainability. Her work integrates field research\, satellite data\, and international collaboration to understand and protect freshwater systems worldwide. \nRegister here!\nIn-person event details \nDoors open at 5:00 p.m. Presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. \nAdvance tickets are $10 through EventBrite and free for students with a valid student ID. Tickets at the door will be $15.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
