SUMMARY:Science Speaks Series: Rethinking Fire: Cultural Burning and the Art of Not Fighting Fire
DESCRIPTION:When fire ravages forests\, homes and lives\, it can be hard to think of it as anything other than terrifying and something to be avoided at all costs. For thousands of years\, Native Americans in what is now California and across the West treated and nurtured fire as a tool through the practice of cultural burning. For non-Native people\, cultural burns require a mental adjustment — one that views fire as restorative\, not destructive.\nJoin Beth Rose Middleton Manning\, a professor in the UC Davis Department of Native American Studies\, and Honorable Ron W. Goode\, the Tribal Chairman of the North Fork Mono Tribe\, for a conversation about the Native American practice of cultural burning. \nRegister for this webinar here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/may-13-2021-rethinking-fire-tickets-146836595209

SUMMARY:Climate Change Adaptation: What We Can Learn from Traditional Ecological Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:This presentation\, hosted by the Mount Lassen Chapter of the California Native Plant Society\, will address how Traditional Ecological Knowledge informs future climate adaptation\, based on California’s long cycles of drought\, fires and floods\, and how native plants and ecosystems figure into climate mitigation before and after disasters. Ali Meders-Knight will be using a case study of her local Tribal territory as an example. Almost all of the data available to Western science in California is only about 100-125 years old\, and so it is absolutely necessary to bring in the longer-term perspective of TEK\, landscape forensics\, and intergenerational knowledge to ensure the surviving and thriving of\, not just native plants\, but all the people who live in this place. \nAli Meders-Knight is a Mechoopda tribal member\, mother of five\, and traditional basketweaver based in Chico\, Calif. She is a Mechoopda Tribal liaison working to form partnerships for federal forest stewardship contracting and tribal forestry programs authorized in the 2018 Farm Bill. She has been a Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) practitioner for over 20 years\, collaborating on environmental education and land restoration projects with Chico State University and the City of Chico. In 2009 she helped plan and establish Verbena Fields\, a unique 17-acre interactive food forest and interpretive park in North Chico\, to help educate the community about the rich ecological heritage of the Mechoopda people. \nJoin webinar here. SUMMARY:California Adaptation Forum 2021 Track 3: Catalyzing Meaningful Adaptation Action Outcomes Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2021 California Adaptation Forum’s outcomes webinar for Track 3: Catalyzing Meaningful Adaptation Action. \nLocal jurisdictions throughout California have been working to understand their climate risks and vulnerabilities\, identify adaptation strategies\, and develop adaptation plans. While this foundational work must continue to ensure that plans are strategic\, aligned\, and informed by community and science\, communities are experiencing and witnessing climate-fueled disasters at an increasing pace. On-the-ground action and projects are urgently needed – across the entire state – to build the resilience of our communities\, infrastructure\, ecosystems\, and economy. This webinar will highlight key takeaways from the track’s workshop series and case studies featuring real-world implementation projects addressing extreme heat\, drought\, sea level rise\, and wildfires. \nThis webinar is open to the public. \nQuestions? Please contact John Vandervort at jvandervort@lgc.org.

SUMMARY:Sierra Nevada Alliance Monthly Webinar: Women in Science with Megan Joyce
DESCRIPTION:Join the Alliance and Megan Joyce\, founder of Kestrel Blue Digital\, as we bring together a panel of women in science and conservation to celebrate the people behind the research\, advocacy\, and policy that helps protect our world. \nWe are excited to have a panel of incredible women with us for this webinar. Panelists include: \n\nSusan Britting: Executive Director\, Sierra Forest Legacy\nJenny Hatch: Executive Director\, Sierra Nevada Alliance\nAli Meders-Knight: Master TEK practitioner with the Machoodpha Tribe\nBeth Pratt: California Regional Executive Director\, National Wildlife Federation\nMeg Seifert: Executive Director\, Headwaters Science Institute\n\nWe will elevate the stories of women who work in this space to show challenges\, and the power that can come from having diverse voices\, perspectives\, and experiences. Often\, we talk about our work and publications or job titles\, and talk less about who we are as science professionals. This panel allows women to share the varied paths taken\, and how they engage in their education\, collaboration\, communication\, advocacy and policy work. \nRegister for the webinar here. \nMeet Megan: \nMegan Joyce is a conservation communications professional working at the intersection between science\, policy\, technology\, and storytelling and she is grateful that her path allows her to have conversations with passionate people about innovative solutions. She has worked to advance conservation and stewardship of the planet with NOAA\, the Wolf Conservation Center\, Cornell University and the Lab of Ornithology\, and Defenders of Wildlife\, and started a consulting business for communication\, facilitation\, and nonprofit management. She has given storytelling talks\, workshops\, and lectures to students and professionals at the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University\, University of California Santa Barbara\, and NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and was featured on a podcast by Pelecanus in partnership with Smithsonian Conservation Commons.
