SUMMARY:Sierra Science Series - California conservation in the genomics era: The CALeDNA and California Conservation Genomics projects
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on March 9th at 6:30pm for our next Sierra Science lecture. \nThe employment of genomic technologies is becoming increasingly important for detecting\, understanding\, and developing species and ecosystem management plans\, including maximizing the adaptive potential of natural systems. Dr. Jason Sexton will describe two programs currently using conservation genetics and genomics in California: 1) California Environmental DNA (CALeDNA)\, a program for detecting DNA in environmental samples\, and 2) the California Conservation Genomics Project (CCGP)\, a project using genomics to understand biodiversity patterns within and across species of conservation concern in CA. He will describe the the background\, technologies\, goals and future opportunities of these programs. These programs enjoy and leverage the help of community scientist volunteers and collaborators across a large collaborative network within California and showcase how public knowledge\, coordination\, and participation can help us all understand and protect our amazing ecosystems for today and tomorrow.

SUMMARY:Sierra Nevada Alliance Monthly Webinar: Pika Palooza with Beth Pratt
DESCRIPTION:Join wildlife advocate\, conservation leader\, Sierra Nevada Alliance board member\, and author Beth Pratt for a fun talk about the most adorable animal on the planet –the pika! Pratt\, who has been observing and studying pika in Yellowstone\, Yosemite and the Sierra for over a decade\, claims “they are also one of the most intrepid creatures in the world for all their adorableness.” The pika also happens to be the Sierra Nevada Alliance’s mascot! During her talk\, Pratt  will show some of her cutest photos and videos\, introduce people to some pika friends from the animals she observes\, and will also discuss how pika are faring with the impacts of climate change. \n  \nA lifelong advocate for wildlife\, Pratt has worked in environmental leadership roles for over twenty-five years\, and in two of the country’s largest national parks: Yosemite and Yellowstone. As the California Regional Executive Director for the National Wildlife Federation\, Beth leads the #SaveLACougars campaign to build the largest wildlife crossing in the world in the Los Angeles area to help save a population of mountain lions from extinction. Her new book\, I Heart Wildlife: A Guided Activity Journal for Connecting With the Wild World\, was released in August\, and she is also the author of When Mountain Lions are Neighbors: People and Wildlife Working It Out In California\, published by Heyday Books. Beth spends much of her time in LA\, but makes her home outside of Yosemite\, “my north star\,” with her five dogs\, one cat\, and the mountain lions\, bears\, foxes\, and other wildlife that frequent her backyard.

SUMMARY:Winter Science Speaks Series - Calculating the Costs of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:What are the costs if climate change increases the risk of extinction of plants and animals? What about costs from impacts to agricultural production and the risk to the global food supply? These are some of the important costs involved in estimating the costs of climate change damages\, a value known as the social cost of carbon. \nFrances C. Moore is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of California Davis. Moore’s research focuses on the economic and social impacts of climate change. In particular\, she has worked across the climate sciences and economics to improve estimates of climate change costs in the agricultural sector and the loss of ecosystem functioning and extinction risk. The goal is to provide a better tool to predict the real costs of climate change by including things that add value to the health of the planet but may not have an easy-to-calculate price tag. Her research bridges climate change science and environmental economics in order to better quantify the risks posed by climate change. \nRegister for this event here:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/march-25-2021-calculating-the-costs-of-climate-change-tickets-128929957975 \nZoom Link available during the scheduled date and time:\nhttps://ucdavis.zoom.us/j/91824967889
