SUMMARY:Climate Conversations: Nature-Based Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Join a discussion about how to better work with nature to build climate resilience and support human well-being and ecosystems. \nNature-based solutions such as restoring wetlands\, planting trees in cities\, and using cover crops can cost-effectively make communities more resilient to the impacts of climate change\, as well as provide over a third of the mitigation needed to achieve the 2030 targets of the Paris Agreement. And while conservation groups; federal\, state and local agencies; international organizations; and the private sector have begun integrating nature-based solutions into their work\, they are not yet utilized to their full potential. Benji Jones (Vox) will moderate a conversation between Todd Bridges (University of Georgia) and LaKesha Hart (Louisiana Office of Planning and Budget) about the role of nature-based solutions and the challenges and opportunities in leveraging these approaches to address the climate crisis. \nThe webinar will be webcast on this page on Thursday\, April 27\, 2023 from 3-4:15pm ET. Closed captioning will be provided. The conversation will include questions from the audience and will be recorded and available to view on the page after the event. \nClimate Conversations: Pathways to Action is a monthly webinar series from the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine that aims to convene high-level\, cross-cutting\, nonpartisan conversations about issues relevant to policy action on climate change. \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Science Speaks Series: Managing water during California's wild changes in climate
DESCRIPTION:Jeffrey Mount is a senior fellow at the PPIC Water Policy Center. He is an emeritus professor of earth and planetary sciences and founding director of the Center for Watershed Sciences at the University of California\, Davis. Over the past ten years California has experienced wild swings in climate\, with two record warm/dry three year periods separated by a year that set the all-time record for statewide precipitation. This increasing climate variability–likely driven by global climate change–is challenging all aspects of water management\, including supply\, hydropower generation\, flood and ecosystem management. Adapting to these changing conditions will require a change in course in water management by all Californians. \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:IN THE FIELD: Wildflower Hike
DESCRIPTION:It’s wildflower season! Come join BYLT in partnership with California Native Plant Society (CNPS) and Yuba River Charter School (YRCS) for two Wildflower Hikes at Wildflower Ridge Trail. \n9:00am guided hike with YRCS is a family friendly/beginner plant and flower identification group that will include a nature activity for the kiddos. \n11:30am guided hike with CNPS will be an intermediate/advanced plant and flower identification group. \nWildflower Ridge Trail is a 3 mile loop rated as moderate. Please bring water\, snacks\, comfortable hiking shoes and a hat. \nMeeting location: Please meet at the parking lot of Twin Cities Church\, 11726 Rough and Ready Hwy\, Grass Valley\, CA 95945 \nAbout Wildflower Ridge: The Wildflower Ridge Trails wind through the former Kenny Ranch property just west of Grass Valley. This area boasts open meadows and is on a forested hillside that drops down toward Deer Creek. There are two trails located on this property; Wildflower Ridge Trail along the ridge\, and Rough & Ready Ditch Trail running along the hillside about ¼ mile below the ridge. Wildflower Ridge Trail is characterized by its thin soil\, caused from an ancient volcanic mud flow. This unusual geology supports a rare concentration of native plants. According to the Redbud Chapter of the California Native Plant Society\, over 100 plant species have been identified on just 25 acres. April through May are the prime months for seeing the brilliant displays of wildflowers. Hidden away on a peaceful wooded slope below the highway\, the Rough & Ready Ditch quietly shuttles water from Nevada City to Rough & Ready — as it has been doing since 1854; this ditch was the first attempt to build a large scale mining ditch in California. \nIN THE FIELD is our monthly event series led by naturalists\, scientists\, local historians\, land stewardship partners\, and our own BYLT staff and board. Attendees can expect to learn more about the protected lands in our community. \nFrom guided and themed hikes on our 45+ miles of local trails to behind-the-scenes tours of our nature preserves and open spaces\, you won’t want to miss IN THE FIELD! \nGroup size is small and space limited\, so early registration is encouraged. \nEveryone is welcome! “In the Field” events are open to the public with special discounts for BYLT members. SUMMARY:The Flora of Nevada County\, California
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Shane Hanofee \nNevada County and the cross-section of the Sierra Nevada it spans offer diverse habitats and a diverse set of plant species that inhabit them. For the first time\, a true Flora of Nevada County is in the works. This is a listing of every single native and naturalized plant that grows within the county\, with identification keys and local insight on their abundance\, range\, and habitat preferences. \nYears in the making\, this Flora is nearing completion. The author\, our own Shane Hanofee\,  will provide a primer on Nevada County floristics and the plants that grow here. He’ll also share the process of making a flora\, the botanical history of Nevada County\, and some exciting discoveries made in the production of this work. \nShane Hanofee is a self-taught certified field botanist who became enamored with native plants shortly after moving to California from New York over a decade ago. Since then\, he has travelled throughout California exploring and documenting California’s fascinating flora. In that time\, Shane has developed a keen understanding of the floristics of the northern Sierra in particular\, while cultivating a love for plant taxonomy and science communication. He is the former president of the Redbud Chapter of the California Native Plant Society. He lives in Grass Valley with his wife Ashley and their bouncing baby boy\, Milo. \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Annual Wildflower Exhibit 2024
DESCRIPTION:Every spring the Maturango Museum hosts the annual Wildflower Exhibit during which visitors can see the wide variety and abundance of wildflowers that grow in the Indian Wells Valley and surrounding canyons. Collectors with the proper BLM permits spend multiple days gathering the wildflowers which are placed into bottles or vases then set onto tables according to their family. This allows visitors to have a close-up view of the many wildflowers from this area – all in one room! \nThe exhibit features annual wildflowers and flowering shrubs. The annual wildflowers include species from the tiny white cryptantha (forget-me-nots)\, to the bright and showy coreopsis (bright yellow wildflower). Shrubs such as the creosote bush and desert senna are also on display. Each species is identified by a group of professional botanists and labeled with its common and scientific name. \nAs in past years\, local artists from the Desert Artist League will be drawing and painting selected wildflowers throughout the weekend. \nIn addition to seeing the wildflowers\, the Maturango Museum has multiple speakers during this year’s Wildflower Exhibit. \n\nFriday\, April 5 at 6:30 pm\, local Glenn Harris will give a presentation on “Holocene Climate Change – How Plants Have Responded.” Find out more about Glenn Harris\nSaturday\, April 6\, at 2 pm\, Kimberly Schaefer\, a master’s student studying Botany at Claremont Graduate University and California Botanic Garden\, will give a presentation on her study area – the Sacatar Trail Wilderness. The title of the presentation is\, “A Vascular Flora of the Sacatar Trail Wilderness\, Southern Sierra Nevada\, CA.” Find out more about Kimberly Shaefer\nSunday\, April 7 at 1 pm\, Eugene Albitre from Bakersfield will give a presentation on Ethnobotany. His presentation is sponsored by the Arts Council of Kern. Find out more about Eugene Albitre\n\nWith the winter rains we have received thus far\, this spring promises a colorful and fragrant display of wildflowers for this exhibit! \nEntry fee is $2.00 per person paid at the door. \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Restoring the Stanislaus Watershed Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The day session will start with plenary discussions led by experts and then hold breakout sessions to discuss the details and make action plans. We’ll learn about the current situation in the Stanislaus watershed and the operations of its dams\, including New Melones. We’ll find out what it will take to redesign the watershed and the New Melones Dam in order to restore the river and its tributaries to health. Just a few of the tantalizing topics include: \n*   How to more rapidly lower New Melones reservoir and conjunctively use that water with groundwater recharge to improve flood control and increase the region’s water supplies. \n\nHow to improve salmon fisheries while preparing and restoring the lower Stanislaus River’s flood capacity in anticipation of extreme climate-change events.\nHow to restore the upper watershed to increase water storage in meadows and soils\, and reduce downstream flood flows. For example\, learn how the reintroduction of beavers can help.\nHow to prepare for the next extended drought so that boating and recreation on the upper river can return and natural restoration can be measured and learned from.\nHow and when New Melones Dam can be reduced to permanently restore and protect the river above Highway 49.\n\nIn the evening session\, while enjoying a delicious dinner\, we’ll learn from Klamath River tribal and environmental representatives how they achieved the world’s largest river renewal project with the removal of four dams. We’ll learn how they are bringing back the salmon as well as their complex strategies for ensuring a successful restoration of their river corridor and newly opened tributaries. \nClick here for more information and to register.
