SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED TO SUNDAY MAY 7 - Wildflower Walk & Talk with Molly Ferry
DESCRIPTION:We are rescheduling for SUNDAY\, MAY 7\, due to rain. We are still accepting reservations. If you need to reserve a spot\, please check Eventbrite for more information. \nWe invite you to join the Sierra Nevada Alliance and the Sierra Club – Mother Lode Chapter as we bring Molly Ferry\, Plant Ecologist\, to share her vast knowledge of wildflowers in the Sierra Nevada. \nYou’ll have the opportunity to walk through the Magnolia Ranch in Pilot Hill and learn about the colorful flowers in the area. This fun and intimate event will allow you to engage with Molly and Jenny Hatch\, the Executive Director of the Sierra Nevada Alliance. \nBring water\, sunscreen\, layered clothes\, sturdy shoes\, and a sack lunch. \nMeet at Magnolia Ranch Trailhead at 10:50 am to chat about safety and sign our liability waiver. The Walk & Talk will begin at 11 am. \nWe’ve updated the location to a nearby trail for better wildflower viewing and river access. \nWildflowers expected: \nIf the weather allows\, we will be wandering through abundant spring wildflowers of the Sierra foothills including Fiddleneck\, Gilia\, Whiskerbrush\, Prettyface\, Clarkias\, Brodiaeas\, Alliums\, Pincushion\, Redmaids\, Owl’s Clover\, Mariposa Lilies\, California poppy and Delphinium. Early reports show the presence of flowers on Whiteleaf Manzanita\, Shooting Star and the unusual California Dutchman’s Pipe. \nAbout Molly: \nMolly has been a botanist in Northern California for 24 years\, mainly practicing in riparian areas and high Sierra meadows. She completed her undergrad in Botany and her masters in Plant Ecology. She has extensive experience performing monitoring and restoration work across a range of landscape types (fire areas\, meadows\, roadsides\, rivers\, floodplains) and bodes a strong background in rare plant conservation. She is especially keyed into native vs. non-native plants and will happily identify and familiarize anyone interested in the names and/or plant families of flora. Her enthusiasm is contagious for spring wildflower populations in the Sierra foothills.  \nShe will use the applications iNaturalist\, Seek\, and eJepson to enhance your appreciation for properly identified flora. \n \nSuggested Donation (you may select your own donation amount upon registration): \n$5 Children 12 and under \n$15 Youth \n$25 Adults \n$50 Event ticket + Pika Protector membership to the Sierra Nevada Alliance (a $75 value) \nClick here for more information and to register. \nRegistering for this webinar will add you to Sierra Nevada Alliance’s email audience. SUMMARY:Forest Carbon Markets 101 - Sierra Nevada Alliance Monthly Webinar
DESCRIPTION:What’s all this talk about carbon? \nCarbon markets\, a component of nature-based solutions\, are a market-based solution to provide funding for various management practices that take up additional carbon on the forested landscape. \nNature-based solutions describe various methods for mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration\, biodiversity protection\, and ecosystem services preservation. \nAll carbon projects must follow a set of principles to achieve meaningful emissions reductions. SUMMARY:The Nature Gap: Confronting Racial and Economic Disparities in America - Sierra Nevada Alliance Monthly Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Nevada Alliance is pleased to have Vanessa Muñoz\, Conservation Program Manager with the Hispanic Access Foundation\, presenting during our August webinar. Vanessa will discuss the lack of diversity in the outdoors and the impacts of the climate crisis on communities of color. \nWhat is the Nature Gap? Nature is supposed to be a “great equalizer” whose services are free\, universal\, and accessible to all humans without discrimination. In reality\,  American society distributes nature’s benefits—and the effects of its destruction and decline—unequally by race\, income\, and age. The United States has fewer forests\, streams\, wetlands\, and other natural places near where Black\, Latino\, and Asian American people live. Notably\, families with children—especially families of color with children—have less access to nature nearby than the rest of the country. In other words\, these communities are nature deprived. These disparities are particularly concerning because nature is not an amenity but a necessity for everyone’s health and well-being.” \nLearn more about the Nature Gap here. \n\n\nAbout Vanessa: \n \nVanessa Muñoz is the Conservation Program Manager at Hispanic Access Foundation. Much like her organization\, she believes in cultivating a society with equitable access to nature and amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities. She recognizes the inherent connection that exists between communities and their natural surroundings. Vanessa also believes in empowering individuals to address environmental injustice. During her free time\, she likes hiking\, bird watching\, and reading. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Reception Celebrating 20 Years of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:Please note: registration for this event is at full capacity and no more tickets are available.  \nTogether the Sierra Nevada Alliance\, Sierra Business Council\, and The Sierra Fund are hosting a special reception to recognize the efforts and dedication of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy in improving the environmental\, economic\, and social well-being of California’s Sierra region for the past 20 years. We are pleased to announce that Senator John Laird will be our master of ceremonies\, and a short program will honor the Conservancy. All are welcome– please RSVP before attending.  \nAbout the Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC): SNC is a state agency that leads efforts to restore and enhance the extraordinary natural resources and communities of California’s Sierra-Cascade region while protecting them from wildfire and a changing climate. SNC serves California’s 27-million-acre Sierra-Cascade region\, which includes the mountains and foothills of the Sierra Nevada range\, the Mono Basin\, Owens Valley\, the Modoc Plateau\, and parts of the southern Cascade Range and Klamath Mountains. The region is vital to California’s water supply\, biodiversity\, and climate resilience. \nSince 2004\, SNC has successfully delivered over $200 million in state funding to 150-plus partners to conduct work restoring and supporting healthy watersheds and resilient communities throughout the region. \nThank you to our event sponsors: Northern Sierra Partnership\, Patty and John Brissenden\, Stantec\, The Rural County Representatives of California\, California State Association of Counties\, Eastern Sierra Land Trust\, El Dorado Irrigation District\, Mining & Metallurgical Society of America\, Nevada Irrigation District\, Placer County Water Agency\, Sierra Forest Legacy\, Sierra Institute for Community and Environment\, Yuba Water Agency\, CBEC Eco Engineering\, Collins Pine\, East Bay Municipal Utility District\, Sierra County Land Trust\, Sierra Nevada Foundation\, Truckee Donner Land Trust\, California Association of Conservation Districts\, Carstens\, Black\, & Minteer LLP\, Forsgren Associates\, Inc.\, Trout Unlimited\, and Truckee River Watershed Council.

SUMMARY:Sierra Day at the Capitol 2024
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nOn April 17\, the mountains are coming to Sacramento. Sierra Day at the Capitol is an event coordinated by Sierra Nevada Alliance\, Sierra Business Council\, The Sierra Fund\, and League to Save Lake Tahoe to advocate for resource investments and specific budget asks to support our collective conservation and restoration goals benefiting the Sierra Nevada and the state’s water supply\, air quality\, carbon-storing forests\, and premier recreation. \nMembers of the conservation community and the interested public are invited to attend. Together\, we will advocate for critical actions to bring more protection\, support\, and funding to the vastly underfunded Sierra Nevada region. \nParticipants will hear from key state and regional leaders\, network with like-minded individuals and organizations\, receive training about how to share messaging with legislators\, and conduct advocacy at the Capitol. \nRegister today to support the Sierra Nevada region and California’s water\, biodiversity\, recreation\, and air quality. Registration is required.  \nOur policy priorities:\nWith a growing budget deficit\, many of the state programs important for the Sierra Nevada region and statewide climate resilience are facing funding cuts. In addition\, the legislature is considering a Climate Resilience Bond measure for the November ballot – and critical funding needs for Sierra conservation and restoration could be included. At this year’s Sierra Day at the Capitol\, our priorities for legislative support will center on preserving funding to effective state programs through the state budget and supporting passage of a climate bond to advance nature-based solutions and conservation to build climate\, wildfire\, water\, and community resilience. \nDress code:\nBusiness or business casual. Wear comfortable walking shoes. \nWhy is this event so important?\nCovering nearly 27 million acres\, the Sierra Nevada and Cascade region is home to: \n\n60% of the state’s water supply\n50% of the state’s forest carbon\n60% of the state’s animal species\n50% of the state’s plant species\nOver 50 million annual visitors\nNumerous rural towns\, communities\, and Native American Tribes.\n\nWatersheds and communities in the region are facing unprecedented risks. Wildfires are moving faster\, burning larger areas\, and are burning at far higher severity than in previous times. Sierra forests are overgrown due to forest management choices in the last century and are also suffering from drought and higher temperatures. At the same time\, many Sierra Nevada meadows and streams are degraded and in need of restoration and protection. All this threatens the Sierra Nevada’s ability to sequester carbon in its forests\, protect the state’s water supply\, provide wildlife habitat\, offer unique opportunities for outdoor recreation\, and support the vibrant rural communities of the region. \nDespite its significance\, the Sierra Nevada has historically been under-represented in legislative and agency decisions about allocating state and federal funding for natural resource protection and management\, including climate adaptation and mitigation. Rural communities in the Sierra Nevada are also often left out of equitable resources and funding for climate projects due to the remote\, disconnected geographic locations and underrepresented populations. As a result\, communities and infrastructure\, as well as the entire ecosystems on which these communities depend\, are at significant risk. \nSierra Day at the Capitol will raise awareness of the Sierra Nevada’s critical benefits and address key investment issues that can help restore Sierra’s forests\, watersheds\, and communities to a healthy and resilient state. By joining us\, you will help amplify our message and push for funding critical for the region and the entire state’s water supply\, air quality\, carbon-storing forests\, and premier recreation. Sierra Day at the Capitol is also an excellent opportunity to meet other inspiring people and organizations working to build thriving communities and ecosystems.

SUMMARY:SNA Speaker Series: A conversation with PCT hiker/activist Riordan Cicciu + the PCT Association
DESCRIPTION:Join the Alliance for a conversation with a special speaker about the intersection of filmmaking and advocacy! We’ll hear from the Pacific Crest Trail Association and guest speaker Riordan Cicciu. We’ll also share the Alliance’s new merch! \n \nAbout the webinar: PCT hiker Riordan Cicciu will speak on his upcoming hike and intention to create a film about the experience. Storytelling is a powerful tool that\, when used correctly\, can act as a catalyst that unites and brings people together to work towards a common goal. By utilizing the ever-growing connectedness of today’s societies\, we have the opportunity to share ideas with the click of a button\, and the potential to do good is greater than it has ever been. Join us to learn how filmmaking\, in particular\, can be used to do exactly this. Then\, hear updates from the PCT association as they join the conversation. \nAbout Riordan: Growing up in South Florida\, Riordan Cicciu naturally took well to the water at a young age. His early childhood was mostly spent collecting sea shells\, diving\, and surfing. In college\, he studied navigation and ship handling at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and obtained an unlimited license to work as a navigation officer aboard massive cargo vessels. For a brief time\, he sailed around the world on enormous container ships. Ultimately\, he decided to end his career as a sailor prematurely in pursuit of something a bit more adventurous. He later worked as an international outdoor adventure guide and began taking groups of tourists on luxurious yet physically demanding vacations in foreign countries. Now\, using his love of travel\, the great outdoors\, and an overwhelming urge to experience the world\, he aims to inspire others to pursue their curiosity and creativity while building a community of achievers who stand for something bigger than themselves.

SUMMARY:Edible Mushroom Foraging Walk
DESCRIPTION:About this event: Join Sierra Nevada Alliance for a fun guided mushroom hunt for all ages! Learn all about edible wild mushrooms and how to hunt for and sustainably harvest them with naturalist guide Luis Rubio-Aguilar from Gateway Mountain Center. This event will take place in South Lake Tahoe\, with location TBD. Location directions will be emailed to all participants before the event. \nFinancial assistance: If cost is an issue\, financial assistance is available. Please contact us at info@sierranevadaalliance.org and we can assist you. \nAbout Luis: When Luis Rubio-Aguilar was 10 years old\, he migrated from his birthplace in Jalisco\, Mexico\, to the Lake Tahoe area. Growing up there was an awesome experience for a kid: He got to ski\, camp\, ride bikes\, play ball and enjoy the beach. At 12 years old he started skiing at Homewood Mountain Resort\, where he fell in love with it. He has now worked in the ski industry for more than 10 years\, and with his PSIA Level 2 Alpine certification he enjoys coaching and teaching kids one of his favorite sports. He is also a camp guide (bilingual)\, mentor and musician. He spends a lot of his free time in woods and meadows identifying plants\, flowers and mushrooms and learning about their uses and their roles in nature. Time in the woods gives him peace of mind\, an opportunity to reflect and a sense of how complex life is. The more he learns about that\, the more in touch he feels with himself and with life’s challenges. Having faced his own share of challenges\, both when growing up and as an adult\, he hopes the experiences he can share with students and peers will offer both knowledge and understanding. \n

Luis will teach participants about the amazing local trees and wildlife here in South Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Basin. Then\, we’ll head to the beach for a free lunch provided by Sombrero’s\, followed by a paddle session on Lake Tahoe with South Tahoe Kayak & Paddleboard. Participants can choose from a double kayak or a paddle board\, and a lifeguard will be present. \nWe will meet at Lake Tahoe Community College for our nature walk. Lunch and the paddle session will take place at El Dorado Beach. \nAttendance is not required at all portions of the day\, but we hope you’ll join us for all three! \nRegister here. \n \nAbout Luis:\nWhen Luis Rubio-Aguilar was 10 years old\, he migrated from his birthplace in Jalisco\, Mexico\, to the Lake Tahoe area. Growing up there was an awesome experience for a kid: He got to ski\, camp\, ride bikes\, play ball\, and enjoy the beach. At 12 years old\, he started skiing at Homewood Mountain Resort\, where he fell in love with it. He has now worked in the ski industry for more than 10 years\, and with his PSIA Level 2 Alpine certification\, he enjoys coaching and teaching kids in one of his favorite sports. He is also a camp guide (bilingual)\, mentor\, and musician. He spends a lot of his free time in woods and meadows identifying plants\, flowers\, and mushrooms and learning about their uses and their roles in nature. Time in the woods gives him peace of mind\, an opportunity to reflect\, and a sense of how complex life is. The more he learns about that\, the more in touch he feels with himself and with life’s challenges. Having faced his own share of challenges\, both when growing up and as an adult\, he hopes the experiences he can share with students and peers will offer both knowledge and understanding.

SUMMARY:Great Sierra River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join Sierra Nevada Alliance and our host sites throughout the Sierra Nevada for the Great Sierra River Cleanup (GSRC) on Saturday\, September 21\, 2024. \nGSRC is a Sierra-wide watershed cleanup event coordinated by Sierra Nevada Alliance in collaboration with California’s Coastal Cleanup Day. \nLast year\, 633 volunteers removed 7\,402.5 pieces of trash from 98 miles of Sierra Nevada waterways. We’re looking to expand our efforts to make an even greater impact. \nYou can be part of the solution and volunteer to help remove litter and plastic pollution from our beloved Sierra Nevada watershed. \nThe Great Sierra River Cleanup (GSRC) is one of many California Coastal Cleanup Day events. Previously hosted by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy\, the Sierra Nevada Alliance is very excited to take the reigns as the GSRC coordinator\, and to continue the statewide effort to reduce plastic pollution and litter in and around our Sierra waterways. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Sierra Nevada Alliance October Webinar: Mining Threats in the Sierra Nevada
DESCRIPTION:California\, specifically the Sierra Nevada region\, is both an old and new extractive frontier\, with hotspots of environmental injustice. Abandoned gold rush-era mines have left a toxic legacy that continues to impact communities and ecosystems. Recently\, high gold prices have sparked renewed interest in exploration for open pit mines\, threatening biologically diverse and sacred landscapes from the Sierras to the desert. Meanwhile\, rising demand for electric vehicles is driving a “white gold rush” for lithium. \nJoin our panel of experts Wendy Schneider\, Executive Director at Friends of the Inyo\, Jared Naimark\, California Mining Organizer at Earthworks\, Ralph Silberstein\, President at Community Environmental Advocates Foundation\, and Jaime L. Wolters\, Desert Lands Organizer at Friends of the Inyo to learn about mining threats in the Sierra Nevada: what is happening\, what are the impacts\, how it conflicts with the State and National conservation goals\, and what we can do to help. \nTo receive the Zoom link\, fill out this form by Friday\, October 11.
