SUMMARY:Sierra Day at the Capitol 2023
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nOn April 19\, the mountains are coming to Sacramento. Sierra Day at the Capitol is an event coordinated by Sierra Nevada Alliance\, Sierra Business Council\, The Sierra Fund\, and League to Save Lake Tahoe to advocate for resource investments and specific budget asks to support our collective conservation and restoration goals benefiting the Sierra Nevada and the state’s water supply\, air quality\, carbon-storing forests\, and premier recreation. \nMembers of the conservation community and the interested public are invited to attend. Together\, we will advocate for critical actions to bring more protection\, support\, and funding to the vastly underfunded Sierra Nevada region. \nParticipants will hear from key state and regional leaders\, network with like-minded individuals and organizations\, receive training about how to share messaging with legislators\, and conduct advocacy at the Capitol. \nRegister today to support the Sierra Nevada region and California’s water\, biodiversity\, recreation\, and air quality. Registration is required and closes at 5 pm\, on Friday Apri 14. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Jennifer@sierranevadaalliance.org or call (530) 542-4546. \nOur policy priorities:\n This year\, our priorities for legislative support will center on restoring funding to effective state programs that use nature-based solutions and conservation to build climate\, wildfire\, water\, and community resilience. \nEvent speakers: \nCalifornia Natural Resources Agency Deputy Secretary for Forestry and Wildland Resilience Jessica Morse: Jessica is a leader of California Natural Resources Agency‘s efforts to increase the pace and scale of science-based forest management to restore healthy forests\, improve watershed health\, protect California’s unique ecosystems\, and make Californians wildfire resilient. \nCalifornia Department of Conservation Director David Shabazian: David directs the California Department of Conservation to deliver more integrated outcomes for carbon management\, watershed management\, hazards management\, and sustainable economic development. From working the soil with his hands to leading policies for working lands\, David is a lifelong champion for natural resource stewardship. \nSierra Nevada Conservancy Executive Officer Angela Avery: Angela leads the Sierra Nevada Conservancy by providing strategic direction and oversight to the Agency’s region-wide staff. As Executive Officer\, she is committed to restoring the health and resilience of California’s Sierra Nevada-Cascade region. \nCalifornia Tahoe Conservancy Executive Director Jason Vasques: Jason leads the California Tahoe Conservancy with a mission to lead California’s efforts to restore and enhance the extraordinary natural and recreational resources of the Lake Tahoe Basin. \nMore speakers coming soon. \nEvent agenda (times have changed slightly): \n9 – 10 am: Protect California Rally at the Capitol (Optional) \n10 -10:30 am: Sierra Day at the Capitol Registration \n10:30 – 10:45 am: Welcome and introductions \n10:45 – 11 am: Legislative and budget process overview \n11 am – 12 pm: Event speakers \n12 – 1:30 pm: Working lunch (lunch will be provided + legislative meeting training) \n1:30 – 4:30 pm: Legislative meetings \n4:30 – 6 pm: Debrief at Fox & Goose (non-hosted food and drinks) \nLocation:\nThe morning briefing is in a conference room on the second floor of the Natural Resources Building. Participants DO NOT need to go through security. Look for signs and the building’s “grand staircase” outside the ground-floor auditorium. \nDress code:\nBusiness or business casual. Wear comfortable walking shoes. \nWhy is this event so important?\nCovering nearly 27 million acres\, the Sierra Nevada and Cascade region is home to: \n\n60% of the state’s water supply\n50% of the state’s forest carbon\n60% of the state’s animal species\n50% of the state’s plant species\nOver 50 million annual visitors\nNumerous rural towns\, communities\, and Native American tribes.\n\nUnfortunately\, most people are unaware that the watersheds and communities in the region face unprecedented risks. Wildfires are moving faster\, burning larger areas and at far higher severity than in previous times. Sierra forests are overgrown due to forest management choices in the last century and suffer from drought and higher temperatures. At the same time\, many Sierra Nevada meadows and streams are degraded and need restoration and protection. All this threatens the Sierra Nevada’s ability to sequester carbon in its forests\, protect the state’s water supply\, provide wildlife habitat\, offer ongoing quality recreation\, and support the vibrant rural communities of the region.  \nDespite its significance\, the Sierra Nevada is historically under-represented in legislative and agency decisions about allocating state and federal funding for natural resource protection and management\, including climate adaptation and mitigation\, and associated emergency management issues. This year\, the Governor proposed budget cuts to programs that have traditionally funded important forest and watershed restoration work – such as significantly cutting the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and Tahoe Conservancy budgets.  \nWe host Sierra Day at the Capitol to raise public recognition of the Sierra Nevada’s critical benefits and address key investment issues that can help restore Sierra’s forests\, watersheds\, and communities to a healthy and resilient state. By joining us\, you will help amplify our message and push for funding critical for the region and the state’s water supply\, air quality\, carbon-storing forests\, and premier recreation. Sierra Day at the Capitol is also an excellent opportunity to meet other inspiring people and organizations working to build thriving communities and ecosystems. \nCheck this page frequently for more updates as the date approaches. \nRegistering for this event will add you to Sierra Nevada Alliance’s email audience. You may unsubscribe at any time.

She is especially keyed into native vs. non-native plants and will happily identify and familiarize anyone interested in the names and/or plant families of flora. Her enthusiasm is contagious for spring wildflower populations in the Sierra foothills.  \nShe will use the applications iNaturalist\, Seek\, and eJepson to enhance your appreciation for properly identified flora. \n \nSuggested Donation (you may select your own donation amount upon registration): \n$5 Children 12 and under \n$15 Youth \n$25 Adults \n$50 Event ticket + Pika Protector membership to the Sierra Nevada Alliance (a $75 value) \nClick here for more information and to register. \nRegistering for this webinar will add you to Sierra Nevada Alliance’s email audience. SUMMARY:Forest Carbon Markets 101 - Sierra Nevada Alliance Monthly Webinar
DESCRIPTION:What’s all this talk about carbon? \nCarbon markets\, a component of nature-based solutions\, are a market-based solution to provide funding for various management practices that take up additional carbon on the forested landscape. \nNature-based solutions describe various methods for mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration\, biodiversity protection\, and ecosystem services preservation. \nAll carbon projects must follow a set of principles to achieve meaningful emissions reductions. These principles govern how the projects are implemented\, how the management is carried out\, and how the credits are sold and traded on the carbon market. \nThis presentation will provide an overview of carbon markets\, the necessary tools to understand how projects are developed conceptually\, and what to look for in a high-quality carbon offset credit. \nClick here to register today. \nAbout Lucas Clay\, PhD Candidate: Lucas is currently a PhD Student at Clemson University in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation\, studying carbon finance\, economics\, and ecosystem services. His research involves quantifying carbon sequestration at the plot level through on-the-ground carbon measurement and at the landscape level through eddy covariance towers and satellite sensors. Through Clemson Cooperative Extension\, he also works with landowners to understand current carbon markets\, project implementation\, and principles while also developing carbon project protocols for reforestation\, regenerative agriculture\, and blue carbon. Lucas completed his Master’s degree at Clemson in Forest Economics and his undergrad at Ball State University in Natural Resources and Environmental Management.

SUMMARY:The Nature Gap: Confronting Racial and Economic Disparities in America - Sierra Nevada Alliance Monthly Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Nevada Alliance is pleased to have Vanessa Muñoz\, Conservation Program Manager with the Hispanic Access Foundation\, presenting during our August webinar. Vanessa will discuss the lack of diversity in the outdoors and the impacts of the climate crisis on communities of color. \nWhat is the Nature Gap? Nature is supposed to be a “great equalizer” whose services are free\, universal\, and accessible to all humans without discrimination. In reality\,  American society distributes nature’s benefits—and the effects of its destruction and decline—unequally by race\, income\, and age. The United States has fewer forests\, streams\, wetlands\, and other natural places near where Black\, Latino\, and Asian American people live. Notably\, families with children—especially families of color with children—have less access to nature nearby than the rest of the country. In other words\, these communities are nature deprived. These disparities are particularly concerning because nature is not an amenity but a necessity for everyone’s health and well-being.” \nLearn more about the Nature Gap here. \n\n\nAbout Vanessa: \n \nVanessa Muñoz is the Conservation Program Manager at Hispanic Access Foundation. Much like her organization\, she believes in cultivating a society with equitable access to nature and amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities. She recognizes the inherent connection that exists between communities and their natural surroundings. Vanessa also believes in empowering individuals to address environmental injustice. During her free time\, she likes hiking\, bird watching\, and reading. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Reception Celebrating 20 Years of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:Please note: registration for this event is at full capacity and no more tickets are available.  \nTogether the Sierra Nevada Alliance\, Sierra Business Council\, and The Sierra Fund are hosting a special reception to recognize the efforts and dedication of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy in improving the environmental\, economic\, and social well-being of California’s Sierra region for the past 20 years. We are pleased to announce that Senator John Laird will be our master of ceremonies\, and a short program will honor the Conservancy. All are welcome– please RSVP before attending.  \nAbout the Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC): SNC is a state agency that leads efforts to restore and enhance the extraordinary natural resources and communities of California’s Sierra-Cascade region while protecting them from wildfire and a changing climate. SNC serves California’s 27-million-acre Sierra-Cascade region\, which includes the mountains and foothills of the Sierra Nevada range\, the Mono Basin\, Owens Valley\, the Modoc Plateau\, and parts of the southern Cascade Range and Klamath Mountains. The region is vital to California’s water supply\, biodiversity\, and climate resilience. \nSince 2004\, SNC has successfully delivered over $200 million in state funding to 150-plus partners to conduct work restoring and supporting healthy watersheds and resilient communities throughout the region. \nThank you to our event sponsors: Northern Sierra Partnership\, Patty and John Brissenden\, Stantec\, The Rural County Representatives of California\, California State Association of Counties\, Eastern Sierra Land Trust\, El Dorado Irrigation District\, Mining & Metallurgical Society of America\, Nevada Irrigation District\, Placer County Water Agency\, Sierra Forest Legacy\, Sierra Institute for Community and Environment\, Yuba Water Agency\, CBEC Eco Engineering\, Collins Pine\, East Bay Municipal Utility District\, Sierra County Land Trust\, Sierra Nevada Foundation\, Truckee Donner Land Trust\, California Association of Conservation Districts\, Carstens\, Black\, & Minteer LLP\, Forsgren Associates\, Inc.\, Trout Unlimited\, and Truckee River Watershed Council.

SUMMARY:Sierra Day at the Capitol 2024
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nOn April 17\, the mountains are coming to Sacramento. Registration is required.  \nOur policy priorities:\nWith a growing budget deficit\, many of the state programs important for the Sierra Nevada region and statewide climate resilience are facing funding cuts. In addition\, the legislature is considering a Climate Resilience Bond measure for the November ballot – and critical funding needs for Sierra conservation and restoration could be included. At this year’s Sierra Day at the Capitol\, our priorities for legislative support will center on preserving funding to effective state programs through the state budget and supporting passage of a climate bond to advance nature-based solutions and conservation to build climate\, wildfire\, water\, and community resilience. \nDress code:\nBusiness or business casual. Wear comfortable walking shoes. \nWhy is this event so important?\nCovering nearly 27 million acres\, the Sierra Nevada and Cascade region is home to: \n\n60% of the state’s water supply\n50% of the state’s forest carbon\n60% of the state’s animal species\n50% of the state’s plant species\nOver 50 million annual visitors\nNumerous rural towns\, communities\, and Native American Tribes.\n\nWatersheds and communities in the region are facing unprecedented risks. Wildfires are moving faster\, burning larger areas\, and are burning at far higher severity than in previous times. Sierra forests are overgrown due to forest management choices in the last century and are also suffering from drought and higher temperatures. At the same time\, many Sierra Nevada meadows and streams are degraded and in need of restoration and protection. All this threatens the Sierra Nevada’s ability to sequester carbon in its forests\, protect the state’s water supply\, provide wildlife habitat\, offer unique opportunities for outdoor recreation\, and support the vibrant rural communities of the region. \nDespite its significance\, the Sierra Nevada has historically been under-represented in legislative and agency decisions about allocating state and federal funding for natural resource protection and management\, including climate adaptation and mitigation. Rural communities in the Sierra Nevada are also often left out of equitable resources and funding for climate projects due to the remote\, disconnected geographic locations and underrepresented populations. As a result\, communities and infrastructure\, as well as the entire ecosystems on which these communities depend\, are at significant risk. \nSierra Day at the Capitol will raise awareness of the Sierra Nevada’s critical benefits and address key investment issues that can help restore Sierra’s forests\, watersheds\, and communities to a healthy and resilient state. By joining us\, you will help amplify our message and push for funding critical for the region and the entire state’s water supply\, air quality\, carbon-storing forests\, and premier recreation. Sierra Day at the Capitol is also an excellent opportunity to meet other inspiring people and organizations working to build thriving communities and ecosystems.
