It was believed that Elk are non-native to the Sierra Nevada, however new information from Rick Lanman and colleagues suggests otherwise! Using historical newspaper accounts, early explorer and naturalist observation records, museum specimens, zooarchaeological records, and Native American references, their broad investigation uncovered evidence that contradicts our current understanding of the history of Elk in the Sierra Nevada.
