Webinar Outline
This presentation, developed by Alliance Action Sports Experts and Austin Ridge Riders, explores the integration of natural surface trails (NSTs) into urban and suburban transportation infrastructure. Traditionally considered recreational assets, NSTs—such as mountain bike singletrack—can also function as practical, low-impact transportation corridors that enhance connectivity, promote multi-modal use, and accommodate diverse users. Using real-world examples like the Whisper Valley subdivision in Texas, the presentation outlines the benefits, planning considerations, and implementation strategies for incorporating NSTs into greenways and public trail systems.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the Role of Natural Surface Trails in Transportation Networks: Participants will learn how NSTs increase corridor capacity, serve varied user needs, and function as viable components of active transportation systems alongside paved trails.
- Identify Key Design and Planning Considerations: Attendees will gain insight into important elements such as trail type (bike-optimized, hike-only), corridor width and topography, and how to plan for user experience, safety, and trail sustainability.
- Learn How to Integrate NSTs into Existing and Future Trail Systems: Participants will explore practical steps for incorporating NSTs into greenway visions by collaborating with traditional A&E firms, specialty consultants, and certified trail builders.
