The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is one of our country’s bedrock environmental laws, and is our single best tool to support a just and equitable buildout of clean energy and transition away from expensive fossil fuels that are worsening the climate crisis. The Biden Administration’s White House Council on Environmental Quality proposed rulemaking that will require the federal government to engage with communities and take health and environmental concerns into account when permitting.
These updates would:
- Roll back dangerous Trump-Era restrictions that impose burdensome requirements on public comments;
- Center community outreach by requiring federal agencies to reach out to people affected by proposed projects early in the environmental review process so our voices will be at the forefront of the decision-making that affects us; and
- Expressly address climate change and environmental justice in the text of the regulations for the first time ever.
